    STAR Error Message in Simulation

Has anyone encountered an error message stating that "STAR has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."This is only happening when the Global Contact is set to "No Penetration" while trying...

Materials Capable of Withstanding 420,000 PPM H2S

Any recommendations of high strength (90 ksi or so) materials capable of withstanding 420,000 PPM (42 %) H2S and 8 % CO2 at 400 degrees F (bottom hole temperature) at 17,000 psi pressure (bottom hole pressure) for an oilfield downhole application? We typically use 4140 HT or 17-4 PH stainless at...

    Downhole Magnet Housing Material

nbucska - The temperature can be ahigh as 400 F and pressure up to 15000 psi. The particles are just junk downhole so will be various sizes. The magnet just needs to be as powerful as possible. There is no way to know if the magnet has retrieved anything. prex-The bottom of the housing will be...

    Downhole Magnet Housing Material

I am searching for a non magnetic stainless steel for a magnet housing to be run in an oil well. I would like a material with 80 ksi min yield strength if possible. I was considering a 300 series stainless but many do not have published yield strengths. This is a very simple design utilizing a...

    Simultaneous Aging and Ion Nitriding

You are correct about the ion nitriding temperature...it is 975F. I would age the stainless steels to H1000 or H1050 but the maraging to only 800F and not nitride. I'm not sure which option would offer the best resistance to galling.

    Timber piling questions.

You may try www.coastaltimber.com for suggestions. They sell pilings and associated materials for bulkheads, warfs, etc. as well as provide contractors to erect these structures on the southern coast of Louisiana.

    Simultaneous Aging and Ion Nitriding

It is about 1" od on average. I was given this time frame from a heat treating vendor.

    Simultaneous Aging and Ion Nitriding

I am looking to age and ion (plasma) nitride one of the three following materials to be used for a shaft in a downhole mud motor application. The possible materials are: maraging C-250, Custom 465, or 13-8 stainless. The requirements are: 200 ksi min. yield, Rc 48 max, and uniform shrinkage from...

Gaulding or "galling" of morse tapers

I appreciate the help guys. I will try the Nitronic 60.

Gaulding or "galling" of morse tapers

Unclesyd, No, haven't seen any thread deformation. Would disimilar metals make the galling worse...4140 joined to the 17-4 PH? IE would making both components of 17-4 reduce the galling of the morse taper male "shank"?

Gaulding or "galling" of morse tapers

I have a 17-4 ph stainless steel shaft utilizing a morse taper with a stub acme thread below it to join two tools used in an oilfield application. The thread is to allow the connection to be pulled in tension. The problem is the taper tends to gauld when in use due to being overtorqued. The...
