Hail loading on warehouse roofs with solar panels to AS1170

I wanted to get peoples opinion on designing for both hail and solar panels(PV) now that the NCC requires all warehouses to be designed for PV panels. Following a number of warehouse collapses after a hail storm in Sydney, the ACSE released guidance for hail loading on roofs. The guidance...

    Sound Barrier Acrylic Deflection Limit

Thanks. I agree that it seems large. However I have found the specification below from DOT New York which references 3 inches. I cant find it in any standards however. The maximum elastic deflection of the transparent acrylic noise barrier panel, under the design wind load shall be less than 3...

    Sound Barrier Acrylic Deflection Limit

I have been provided a design for acrylic panels for a sound barrier by the manufacturer. They have designed to a deflection limit of span/20 or 75mm which they have claimed is standard practise in the USA but can't produce any reference documents. In Australia AS5100.2 cl25.3.8 stipulates...

Friction resistance of no fines gravity wall

EireCHch Yes I would normally use 2/3 phi which would be appropriate for a crushed rock base. I am concerned that if the crushed rock is substituted with concrete then the sliding resistance will actually be reduced. But I see concrete being substituted for crushed rock on a regular basis.

Friction resistance of no fines gravity wall

Does anyone have any information on the coefficient of friction of a segmental retaining wall with gravel or no fines backfill on the concrete base? It seems to be general practise to interchange either a concrete or crushed rock base, but I am concerned that the concrete base will provide a...

Is it reasonable to Interpolate wind loads on 45 degree corner?

Yes the corner posts are braced. The affected zone is 2 times wall height however. This wall is 14m high so it would extend 28m either side. Thanks again

Masonry rebar splice length vs grout lift height

Is it a bad thing to have splices extending across multiple lifts? You will end up with a line of bars terminating at the same point as a construction joint otherwise. Perhaps you could stagger the laps vertically and extend across lifts. I have seen a wall blow out that was poured too soon...

Is it reasonable to Interpolate wind loads on 45 degree corner?

Hi Tomfh Thanks for the response. I am using AS1170.2 (2011) Table D2 (C). See link below. AS1170.2 (2021) says the same, but it is not gazetted yet. https://res.cloudinary.com/engineering-com/image/upload/v1655864163/tips/AS1170.2_extract_wp0ium.pdf I know that ASCE 7-16 suggests that local...

Is it reasonable to Interpolate wind loads on 45 degree corner?

Hi all I am designing a noise wall that that has multiple 45 degree (or 135 deg) changes in direction along its length. Australian standard AS1170.2 Appendix D, stipulates that the pressure coefficient for a 90 degree corner formed in a wall is 1.8 vs 1.2 typically. The commentary gives no...
