    fire water demand

Is this a rural project? You can get some pretty low fire flow requirements on rural projects. Parking garages have been upgraded to OH2 in NFPA 13, 2022 and newer. If this is a multi-building complex and you have a flow test at the street as it comes to the property, my opinion is that you...

    Schedule 40 vs 10 for pre-action system

Pipes as thin as Sch 5 are used in fire sprinkler systems. Obviously you aren't going to thread anything below Sch 30. You can use Sch 10 down to 1¼" with no problem at all. Now that Victaulic makes a 1" grooved system (IGS), I don't see why you can't use 1" Sch 10. Long gone are the days...

When to include exterior dry sidewall sprinklers in calculations with interior sprinklers?

Is the exterior wall rated? If it's rated, I think it is pretty clear that you separate them. If it is not rated, then I could easily see some one interpreting that you need to include them in your calculation area and it would not be hard to justify that requirement either.

Automatic Fill Valves for Sprinkler Tanks

SD2 - How have you been? Been a long time since we've talked. I hope you are doing well. I just did the prep for a webinar on sizing break tanks. You have to check for multiple points before you are good. 1 - Do the makeup. You have done that. It is total demand - refill rate. That is...

    fire water demand

I highly suggest you contact a competent fire sprinkler contractor or a competent fire protection engineer. Site fire flow, standpipes and sprinklers are individual demands. They are not required to be compounded, unless you have an authority (local code enforcement, insurance, etc) that...

Question about whether a system is NFPA 13 or NFPA 13R

IMO, the entire building is is 13 or 13R. Unless they created horizontal separations that allow the upper floor to be considered a separate building under the building code, then you are protecting per NFPA 13 for the entire building. Typically, that horizontal separation is a 2-3 hour rated...

Flow test or fire pump test

A fire pump test is a completely valid water supply test for a fire sprinkler system design. It is more valid than a hydrant flow test at the street. It would account for any discrepancies or deficiencies in the underground supply to the fire pump. Unless you are going to calculate through...

Help with Fire Sprinkler Design Area

As said above, the calc areas are incorrect. I would recommend you reach out for training through sprinkleracademy.com as neither of those calc areas are close.

Calculating K Factor (odd oriface size)

I can't agree with this more. We look at water supply durations of 1-3 hours when looking at reliable and tested interior sprinkler systems. These deliver anywhere from 10-200 gpm / sprinkler depending on application. These outside perimeter systems are just feel good systems that likely...

Fire Water Pipe Size & High Flow Building

I believe you have asked this across multiple different sites. The answer is that you really need a good mentor to teach you fire sprinkler system layout and design. You don't calculate all sprinklers flowing at once. You need help better determining your area of coverage per sprinkler. You...

Fire Water Pipe Size & High Flow Building

    This is the best answer.

Domestic meter sizing for combined domestic/fire sprinkler system

Are you an FPE? What is your role in this project? Since the domestic calculations give you 32 gpm and the sprinkler + 5 gpm is 29 gpm, then you go with the greater of 32 gpm. Of course you need to confirm this yourself with all authorities involved.

Domestic meter sizing for combined domestic/fire sprinkler system

You do the sprinkler demand plus a 5 gpm allowance through the meter. That is in the CFC, I believe.

Steel Joists, Wood Floor Combustible Concealed?

I believe it is <6" between structural members. I am sure the wording could be cleaned up to truly verify it.

Steel Joists, Wood Floor Combustible Concealed?

It needs to be insulation filled. You can get away with, I believe, a 2" air gap AFTER settling, but that is all.
