Painting exterior steel not exposed to weather - is paint required

Unpainted. "Paint may weaken the adhesion of spray-fireproofing". At least that is what I have gathered from a simple Google search. I'm not sure how clean the surface needs to be, but I would think you do not want any rust, grease or oil. "Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what...

How to calculate platform grating load

What load are you trying to find? The allowable PSF on the platform? The load on the knee braces? Grating specs typically outline the allowable PSF. After figuring out what type of grating it is and the allowable load, the rest seems like simple steel design. "Research is what I'm doing...

    Galvanized Steels Vs Stainless Steel

One must also consider venting for HDG. If vent holes are unacceptable in a certain application then the use of HDG is not an option. "Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing."

Need advice on torquing M12x1.75 class 10.9 bolt connecting a NV4500 transmission to an aluminum

Although aluminum and iron are not good friends in regards to corrosion, there is very little exposure to an electrolyte in this scenario. OEMs have been using aluminum bolts on iron blocks for a long time. I presume they expect the life of the car to not be longer than the time it would take...

    Obtaining material stress-strain curve

I believe the ASTM standards have all the properties you may be interested in. If you know the ASTM number, you can find it on their website. However you will probably have to purchase the standard. I would think it is alot cheaper than performing your own tests. "Research is what I'm...

    "Your mileage will vary"

Hmm that seems way off. I'm getting about 3-4 mpg more than the sticker said in my 2011 Ranger in both highway and residential driving. It is a 4 cylinder and manual transmission, however. I just hit the 10k mile mark. "If You Can't Find Anything To Live For Then You Better Find Something To...

    Best Way To Sort MTRs?

We do option 1 here and it is not that time consuming once you have the system in place. Deliveries are recieved in and then MTR's, CoC's and whatever required paperwork are scanned and placed into the job folder on the company server. When the time comes to ship out fabricated products, it is...

Advice for a College Student - Structural Engineer

Civil engineering and architecture are two different things, although somewhat linked. I graduated about a year and a half ago from a respected university in structural engineering. I had 5 internships during my studies. It was my last semester at school when I realized that I didn't want to...

Writing racing rules - ECU tune checking?

What kind of cars are running in this? I don't think you can require that competitors run the latest ECU in a car model even if it was compatible, that's basically a forced modification. And yes you can change tunes with the push of a button, if the car is properly equipped.

Solidworks - Add degree symbol into Sketch Text on a Sketch in a Model

I just read this post while searching for the alt code to use. None of the ones posted worked and I had to try different numbers for a while, alt 248 finally worked for the degree symbol. I'm on SW 2012.

fuel economy difference in cargo shipment

rmw, the 9.25 gallons was the theoretical increase in fuel consumption related with a 10% increase in rolling friction. None of this considers the increased fuel required to accelerate as well as the increased wear on brakes/clutch for hauling the added weight.
