Maximum cement grout thickness beneath the base plate

Thanks for your responses. I could not find the specific thickness in the manufacturer instructions. There are some general guidlines saying if you want to use any grout at large thicknesses you should make sure that its properties are suitable for your application!! I called them and they say...

Maximum cement grout thickness beneath the base plate

I am working at the site of an 8-story steel structure (moment resisting frame). The structure is located in a highly active seismic zone in CA. The construction of the mat foundation has been finished. The base plates have been placed and leveled and now they want to install the columns of the...

    Pile Soil Spring Constant

I suggest that you take a look at API recommended spring constants (p-y, q-z, ...). I think these properties are the common practice although recent CALTRANS research has shown that depending on the pile boundary conditions, the API lateral spring (p-y) capacities may be conservative.

Is FE/EIT needed for someone with Ph.D?

By the way my state of interest is California.

    Thank you all so much.

Is FE/EIT needed for someone with Ph.D?

One of my friend at school told me that if someone has Ph.D. he/she deos not need to take the FE exam. She said this is a new policy by NCEES. I could not find anything about this on the oficial website for FE. Has anyone heard about this?

    Nonlinear push-over analysis

cwrugrad, thank you for your response. I almost figured out how to do the analysis and actually right now I want to do nonlinear time-history analysis using my nonlinear model. Now my question for you is: What are the default hinge properties in SAP? why should we change these properties...

Nominal moment strength & plastic moment capacity

As I was reading through this threat, I could find the correct deffinitions of elastic (the whole section remains elastic with triangular stress distribution) and plastic (the whole croos-section is under Sigma_p) bending moment capacities. The only thing that I want to add from structural...

    seismic parameters to UBC 97

Local codes are the best sources. Most of the countries in that region has their own codes and published atandards.

    Nonlinear push-over analysis (software/reading)

Is Nonlinear SAP200 (v.8 2004) a good software for doing nonlinear push-over analysis for RC moment frame bldgs? I know that this version has the capability of doing this analysis. Is there anybody out there who has done this analysis with SAP and is there any suggestion/encountered difficulty...

Laterally loaded pile in liquifiable soil

I am not quiet familiar with comp624p but you can model the lateral behavior of the pile using concave-up p-y curves like the ones reported by Scott Ashford. This is an open research area and the experimental data shows that at large displacements liquefied soil will demonstrate increasing...

    Seismic Site Classification

Is it costly to measure Vs30? I guess this is the most reliable way of determining the site class. I think it is cheaper than boring isn't it?

interpolating the beam nodal curvature values (Finite element question

Thanks for all your responses. pja, you are right. I do not observe inter-elemental continuity. I have decided to use moment-curvature relationship instead of "differentiation of deflection" to find the curvature values. Prex, you had asked about the problem I am solving: I have analyzed a...

interpolating the beam nodal curvature values (Finite element question

Prex, Thanks for your response. But I know that the curvature is the 2nd derivative of deflection but when I derive the Hermit functions twice and multiply them with nodal displacements, I do not get a correct curvature response. I guess Hermit shape functions satisfy the displacement and slope...
