    We use contact cement and you really have to work if you have to take it apart.

    Drill your corners and use a jigsaw or a nibbler, circular saws can be used but tend to bind and some of the blades tend to blow apart under stress.

    For your preladed set up a dial indicator on the end of the shaft, and add enough shims till you get some freeplay. Then add the amount of free play to the amount of preload you want, and remove that amount of shims. If I remember right from my time at John Deere most of the time it was around...

    Galvanized pipe and gas systems?

    I don't know about the legal end of it but the main reason for not using galvanized parts on gas lines is it tends to flake off and can plug up the small passages. If it's in good shape you might be ok. If there's room you could install a drip leg to catch the flakes.
