Rule of thumb for weld strength in various metals?

Hi All, I’m curious if you have a general practical rule for estimating weld strengths in different metals. Steel – Most of what I’ve heard says that a high quality weld is as strong as the base steel. Aluminum – I’ve heard that quality weld strength is ~ 60% as strong as the base aluminum...

Spring steel fins for up-hole sensor installation

Thanks guys. I'm going to go with 1095 spring steel sheet, .025" for starters and see how that goes. Any other suggestions please shoot.

Spring steel fins for up-hole sensor installation

Neat idea, but it needs to be very inexpensive, simple, and, like I said, this concept worked very well for the strength required (sensor is cemented in place once it reaches desired position). Just needing advice to help narrow in on the type of steel with less trial and error.

Spring steel fins for up-hole sensor installation

Hi All, I'm working on an addition to a mining sensor which will enable it to be installed into up-holes (i.e. holes in the ceiling) and "grapple" it in place. Without going into too much irrelevant installation detail, I built a quick prototype with four fins cut from .025" thick aluminum...

Outdoor cold weather (-40 degree) climate-controlled server rack

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has seen or worked with outdoor cold weather climate-controlled server (computer) racks. It would be much simpler to source one rather than attempting to design one. Ideally it would be thermostat-controlled and rated down to about -40 degrees (C or F). Any leads...

Delta T across a flat ceramic plate

zekeman, So you're saying that h (heat transfer coefficient) = 100 BTU/hr-ft^2/degF, correct? Why assume 100 BTU/hr-ft^2/degF, and how can I have any idea whether this is a roughly correct assumption? In particular we're talking about a hot well head here - and I have no idea whether this...

Delta T across a flat ceramic plate

I need a ceramic plate to insulate between a hot mounting surface and a piece of equipment mounted to the other side of the plate - so the plate will have a hot and cold side. I know the temperature of the hot mounting surface and the ambient temperature, but don't know heat load in Watts or...

Indicating media blast on a portion of a cylindrical surface

KENAT, I don't think you're missing anything, but I don't want to improvise. I need to know what the correct way to identify the portion of the surface would be per ANSI. By phantom lines you mean construction (dashed) lines?

Indicating media blast on a portion of a cylindrical surface

I have a stainless steel cylindrical part. A portion along its length needs to be media blasted with aluminum oxide. How do I correctly specify the limits (end locations) of this section that will have the media blasted surface? I'm using ANSI... Thanks in advance!

Animation of 360 degree rotation about Y axis through origin

See attachment. The origin wanders side to side.http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=18042502-fd01-41a0-ac71-e884eec745ad&file=assembly.avi

Animation of 360 degree rotation about Y axis through origin

I want to create a 360 degree rotation of an assembly about the y axis. I have done this with the Animation Wizard. Unfortunately when I do this the origin wanders (doesn't stay at one point). However, I want the origin to stay put and have the part rotate about the y-axis through the origin. I...

Exporting web based 3D spinnable models?

The marketing people at work would like to take SolidWorks 3D assemblies of products and produce web-based 3D spinnable models that they can put on the website, similar to car manufacturers' websites having the 360 degree spin views. Anyone know how I could go about this? There are two options...

SW 2012 SP2 sketch picture functionality and Insert->Picture

CorBlimeyLimey, For #1, are you saying that you also don't see the Insert->Picture option when you're in an active sketch?

SW 2012 SP2 sketch picture functionality and Insert->Picture

I have just "upgraded" to SW 2012 SP2 and am seeing two problems right off the bat: 1. Insert->Picture does not seem to work while in a sketch (or otherwise). There is simply no option to insert a picture under my Insert menu whether I'm in an active sketch or otherwise. 2. If I insert a...

Force to overcome friction of piston to move it

I've done testing on something very similar to this too. If you reduce the diameter, you reduce the static friction from the O-rings as mentioned, but you also reduce the force exerted on the piston due to any given pressure. The force exerted on the piston due to the pressure difference grows...
