This is definitely not "standard" industry practice. I'm using ABAQUS for years and I haven't experienced something like this.
ABAQUS is at least as powerful as ANSYS. I don't know of any conversion utility from ANSYS to ABAQUS. The best would be to talk with the people from the next...

Can't really help you with the error message, since I'm using ABAQUS as solver. But there may be a problem with boundary conditions that do not sufficiently constrain your model.
To write results into a file you can use the command List/Output/Unformatted (or Formatted, what ever you prefer)...

Is it possible to access the ABAQUS license server through the internet? The computer, on which the license server is running, is in my office. Sometimes it would be very usefull to quickly run a small ABAQUS job on my computer at home.
