    Two-stroke cycle engine

@Hemi, Ski Doo & Polaris use a similar system for reverse on some of their snowmobiles. Selecting reverse cause the engine to shut down and start again in reverse. There's some additional changes to the driven CVT clutch so it will work in reverse and I'd guess the oil pump has to work...

    Two-stroke cycle engine

VE1BBL: Tuned pipes are common on RC 2-stroke engines as well as snowmobile & dirt-bike engines. They use the reflected high pressure pulse from the convergent end of the pipe to push fuel/air mixture back into the cylinder that has escaped out the exhaust port. They only work over a narrow...

Full scale reproduction WWII fighter aircraft utilizing carbon fibre composites?

Quote wktaylor: " The Bell acft [P-39, P-63] did have that miserable engine arrangement: however, pilots just didn't worry about it all going-to h*ll... thats why they were issued first class parachutes... and 'flight pay' was so high" I suspect they did worry about it a lot, and flew their...

Full scale reproduction WWII fighter aircraft utilizing carbon fibre composites?

From the looks of it a PT-6 would fit nicely in most RR Merlin cowls and give similar power figures with less weight and orders of magnitude better reliability. Air intake and exhaust sizes would have to be different and might ruin the lines somewhat. Are you familiar with the Thunder Mustang?

Carburetion and jet sizes for restrictor plate racing

Is the restrictor plate before or after the carburetor?

Pitching moment due to thrust and drag.

" At level flight, an increase in thrust induces a climb and an incease in aircraft pitch, and a thrust off (power off) results in a descent and decrease in aircraft pitch." Assuming the aircraft is trimmed for level flight (which really means trimmed for a certain angle of attack) this is...

    Air France crash?

"I wonder what kept a wing from dropping allowing the aircraft to enter a spin". Yaw damper?

    Air France crash?

The private pilot in me wonders if "Attitude + Power = Performance" wouldn't have saved them but I have no idea if you can hand fly a plane precisely enough at that altitude, using only the artificial horizon and the throttles, to keep it between a stall and going too fast. I suppose you'd...

Hybrid vehicle: series or parallel drive. Which is better?

The big advantage I see with the Volt (and granted it's only one specific version of a series hybrid drivetrain) is that for the first 40 miles it's purely electric and therefore guaranteed more fuel efficient than the Prius. I recall reading somewhere that the average daily commute was 30...

Cannondale Simon - electronically controled adjustable damping

http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/on-show-interbike-2009-part-3 Thoughts? It looks like a really interesting concept to me. I can see lots of potential for this, for example: On a rear shock with a power measuring hub you could have active anti-bob to isolate pedaling forces completely from...

    Compressor to 2 stroke eng.

Why not a tuned pipe? Especially since it sounds like your motor will be working at a fixed or relatively narrow RPM range. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuned_pipe

    Rear suspension design

The two most common ways are through valving, specifically low speed compression damping and through linkage and pivot placement to isolate rear suspension movement from chain tension. The following page might be of interest to you: http://www.rdrop.com/~/twest/mtb/pathAnalysis/ As far as...

Engine Detonation Effects re Knock Sensor Strategy

I've always been curious how the ECU handles a change from a low to a high octane fuel. Is the timing advanced a bit every once in a while to keep track of where the detonation limit is?

Loctite or Anti-seize on MTB fasteners

In my experience it depends on the fastener. A torque wrench, the various manufactures' torque specs and the appropriately sized hex bits is probably more important than the specific compound you choose. For brakes blue Loctite but for a lot of other fasteners regular grease or, depending on...

    Supercharger bypass valve operation

Is the cost of an intercooler that can handle manifold vacuum that much more than the cost of designing and building a bypass system, especially one that may affect driveability? Additionally, what is the cost if the bypass system fails?
