I would thnk that you would have to do a stress analysis on the piping including the force you would need and see what the piping is going to do under that stress. What kind of misalignment are you trying to deal with?
Generally its much easier to have a site contractor cut and refeb the pipe...

IDW's will only update once you have saved the model and sometimes hit the update button. However if your graphics card is not up to scratch I have found that you actually have to close and reopen the IDW as well.
Sorry to burst the bubble here, Inventor does not do transitions - round to square - unfolding when using the sheetmetal function (or any other for that matter). One can unfold round extrusions or lofts providing there is no transition from and angular to a rounded shape.

Just upgrade to AutoCAD Mechanical 2007. If you want realistic 3D threading, it can do it, if you are only looking for 2D representation, it has the most complete library I have seen for a long long time. Even allows you to do bill of material generation, limited stress analysis, keeps track...
Sounds like what you are doing is similar to sheetmetal development. There are numerous packages that sits on top of Autocad that you can try, the best one I found is Striker. It will do development for you as well as nesting.
