Late to comment but it hasn't been mentioned that the ground snow load is not the final roof design snow load due to all the factors that need be applied to the ground snow load to apply to the roof.
Is there a requirement that moment connection beam flange backer bars be removed?
If so, do the welds require a specific treatment or reinforcing?
The applicable general code for the project is IBC 2009 in the USA.
Any references on the topic would be helpful.
Can a column cap plate be used in place of the top stiffeners in a beam to column rigid frame connection at the top of the column?
I think that the beam top flange to cap plate weld would need to be a fully developed weld but how would the cap plate to column welds be determined?
Would the...
I often see jamb designs come through using a stud capped with heavy track to make boxed tubelike section. Sometimes two such assemblies but never more.
That would save some width.
Does anyone provide slab to slab dowels for slab on grade garage floor slab joints?
I've recently seen a highway slab detail that provided smooth dowels but it seems like that may be related to frost movement and heavy repeated loading.
Should "design" or "ultimate" coefficient of friction be used to input into Code related load combinations?
A Code in mind also requires a SF of 1.5 after running the numbers.
I should add the the difference between the design and ultimate values is a factor of 1.5
What would be the requirements and construction difficulties generated by having a soil shear key on the bottom of a retaining wall footing?
In designing a retaining wall with substantial lateral loading it is difficult to get a design with a reasonable footing width due to the sliding safety...
I have heard from contractors many times "I'm not an Engineer, but I've always done it that way and never had a problem".
Then when a problem occurs the statement gets shortened to "I'm not an Engineer."
10 years is not a conservative recurrence time to base a building design on.
It seems that the trend around here as of late is more severe weather more often.
Thanks again for all the information.
Doe the IBC allow reducing wind loads on metal studs for deflection checks?
A vendor claims that the code allows it but it seems counter intuitive to reduce a code derived loading and then apply the reduced load to a specified deflection.
