Suction pipe design and impeller material

Thank you for both of your replies. This pump will be cheap and simple, but I'm using this as an opportunity to learn. So I do appreciate your time and thoughts. *The NALCO NexGuard chemical has a pH of ~13 according to its safety data sheet. It's of course very much diluted, though I do...

Suction pipe design and impeller material

I need to install an pump to intermittently transfer boiler makeup water from a 6000gal tank (~8ft tall x 11ft dia). The bottom of the tank sits ~18ft below the fill line on the heating boiler, which is pressurized at ~18psig. I was envisioning the transfer pump (centrifugal) on the ground at...

    Efficiency of Power Generation

Spike, Foams and fabrics would probably be best burnt up in a fluidized bed boiler, which allegedly burn most things you throw at them while capturing most of the nasty pollutants before they go out the stack. I think 'foam and fabic (polyester?)' and I think NOx and VOCs. Costs alot of money...

    LP Condensation: Usable work?

I should clarify something: by 5 inches of vacuum, I meant 5 inches of mercury absolute, or 25 inches vacuum. For the steam flow we put through the condensers (60-80 klb/hr each), the vacuum we *should* be pulling, as per the design performance curves, is about 2.5" mercury absolute. I think...

    LP Condensation: Usable work?

So...you're saying the latent heat/enthalpy given off in the LP by the portion of steam that condenses at (theoretically) constant temperature and pressure IS mechanically capturable by the turbine? Our situation includes three 50+ year old GE steam turbines (2x7.5MW, 1x9.375MW) retrofitted...

    Book suggestions

Of course there is "STEAM" from Babcock & Wilcox. Believe they just released the 41st edition. Has mostly full derivations of the heat mass transfer principles for any gas or coal fired boiler. Otherwise a darn good general reference. I have a book entitled "Combustion: Fossil Power Systems"...

    LP Condensation: Usable work?

Let's say steam starts to condense while still in the LP section of a turbine, exiting at a quality of 95%. Is the amount of latent enthalpy given off while still in the LP available as mechanical work to the turbine? I question that a simple delta h times mass flow in this case gives a real...
