I've been working on several projects of recent that utilize 3/8" through-plates in HSS. We have found the above mentioned jig and plasma cutter has been working out very well.

Solidworks Enterprise PDM has a part number feature that will automaticly name all of your new parts, assemblies, drawings, and other files with a unique part number when adding a file to the vault.
Im not sure if PDM Workgroup has the same feature, but we found it to be very helpful compaired...
