3. install a 1 ohm 10 watt resistor in series with the vehicles battery

Specs on Gm go as high as 14.75. With the stop & go driving we see nowdays anything below 14.2 will probably give you short battery life.Even the long haulers are running 14.2/14.5 volt setting. Years back they ran 13.6/13.8,

This type of Alternator is self-energized by the residual magnetisun in the rotor.Over time this magnetisum loses its strength & has to be energized by a external power.Upon doing so it should last several months or maby even a year.
Some off-shore alternators coming into the US are not made...
Machinery's Handbook features some good points on most any kind of grinding.This book has been around since the early 1900's & is probably in its 30th edition.Most all machine shops will have a copy of this book.Local library may have a copy. mine is the 16th addition printed in 1962.
This type of design used mostly in the 1980's on automotive diesel applications. The thru shaft was used to drive a vacuum pump. your local automotive junk yard should have this alternator. Ford,gm,mit,hitachi ... ect they all had this system installed on there automotive diesel vehicles.
Two (2) posibilities
1. substition for a idiot light that is used to excite the regulator.Full battery voltage could eventully destroy the regulator trio circurity.
2.sub for a thermistor that is used to measure the battery temp which lets the alt start to charge.
