I am interested to know safe (for rust) way of transporting gear box from Europe to India.
During testing of the GB the oil splashes all over the interiors of GB and lubrication happens.
The oil is drained after testing and only a film of oil remains on the internal parts.
Can this film...
Hello Unclesyd,
I note your point on high velocities will lead to to leaching.
My concern still is why do we get blackish color when we rub our finger - even after washing!. Rubbing of finger does not apply much force
Thanks

Hello,
What is the effect of graphite particles (coming out of machined cast iron) on the gear box life.
Please note that we do hot alkali wash the cast iron part before assembly. However, the black color is still seen on some places on the surface.
We need to use tissue paper and manually...
Hello all,
We are using a Cast Iron housing which has a machined hole. We pump lubrication oil through this hole.
Will there be any erosion of graphite from the cast iron and will it get mixed with lubricating oil.
I have this doubt because, if we rub our finger over machined surface, the...
Hello redpicker and corypad,
Thanks for the feedback.
The case is of first type i.e. to check presence of Manganese Phosphate or no coat.
Let me explain some more background:
We assemble Manganese Phosphate coated part with slight interference on to a shaft. We see some powders (presumably Mn...
Hello all,
I am looking for a chemical test which will help me to detect the presence or absence of Manganese phosphate coating on steel part.
Your feedback please.
Thanks

We have some SG Iron castings. We found exploded graphite formation in some of the castings after machining.
(The confirmation was done by destructive study of one casting)
Are there any NDT method to find out how much depth is exploded graphite?
Thanks

While taking datum for finding position, Is it right to do the following in a CMM:
1. Probe three points to form a plane.
2. Probe two circles and join their centres to form a line.
3. Use one of the above same centre as a point to completey fix datum system. (3-2-1 principle).
I think the...
Hello all,
Thanks for your inputs.
Here are some feedback and queries from me:
1. We maintain nitriding temperature at 515 deg. C conctant.
2. Also purging is done during cool off.
3. I tried cupric chloride test on sample pc. It exactly behaves like copper sulphate test, except for the...
Hello mfgenggear,
Thanks for your feedback. Here are answers for some of your queries and my follow up questions.
1. Nitriding is by gas nitriding.
2. No white layer removal is done. Grinding done on only very minimal area for bearing fitment. In gear area and most of the areas of the part...
Hello,
We are doing nitriding of large internal gear (appx. 1.5m in dia) We are finding that some areas are as bright as original steel material before nitriding. There is high level of variation within a part.
We tried 5% copper sulphate solution to check the effectiveness of nitriding...
Hello all,
Thanks for your comments.
Now I have few more questions:
1. Will the hardness on the skin of the casting be more or less than say 1 mm below the skin?
2. Why the hardness checking surface is prepared by grinding before hardness check (for eg. Poldi or Foundrax)
I am trying to...
Hello,
I do not have much experience with UT. But I have heard UT technicians talk about deadzone. i.e. they say UT does not detect any cracks in the first 15 mm from the surface where UT probe is kept.
These undetected cracks can show up after machining.
Thanks,
SPM
Hello,
We are procuring Grey cast Iron casting (GG25) from one of the supplier.
Supplier has checked in 10 spots and certified the casting to 185-200BHN using Poldi hammer. He also has certified UTS value as 305MPa.
Supplier then shipped the casting to Europe.
When European plant checked...
Hello,
We are doing carburising hardening some gear parts.
After tempering we do shotblasing of the parts.
Now, customer is insisting on 100% removal of soot from the parts. He also wants the part to look like steel grey and not blackish. The evaluation method is rubbing a tissue paper on the...
