    Solidworks 2024 strange behavior...

ctopher, Installation on local dedicated machine... I have been using it more...and the main delay is on the options window, when close it. Other user interfaces are OK... That one window just takes 10-12 seconds to close. Very strange.

    Solidworks 2024 strange behavior...

We just jumped from SW 2019 to SW 2024. We also updated video drivers to that recommended by the Solidworks compatibility listing. We have noted some strange behavior. Specifically, when you open some sort of setting window like the System or Document properties interface, and go to close...

No Penetration Boundary Condition in Modal FEM (Solving for Natural Frequencies)

SWComposites, We are dealing with custom equipment in a highly competitive market. We use FEA to tell us how much to thicken baseplates, and whether to add gussets. Just saying "beef it up" does not work in the real world in a highly competitive market. Having very accurate FEA results is key...

Why are open source FEA tools so far behind commercial FEA tools?

JoshPlumSE, What is difference vs the CFD world? Because OpenFOAM seems to have broken through and is now considered a viable platform vs commercial codes. Is this because CFD is more computationally intensive, and an open source package that has no "per core" licensing restrictions has a...

No Penetration Boundary Condition in Modal FEM (Solving for Natural Frequencies)

Thanks for the prompt reply. We manufacture rotating machinery that is vertically mounted - somewhat tall and skinny with a fixed base mounting available. Avoiding operation near critical frequencies is very important to stop underlying excitation from amplifying, and causing high vibration...

No Penetration Boundary Condition in Modal FEM (Solving for Natural Frequencies)

We regularly perform FEA based Modal Analysis on what are essentially cantilevered vertical structures. The bases are bolted joints, and the real world interface between the sole plates and the structure are a can be a source of significant error. If we model as a bonded contact, the...

Induction Motors- PF low on Phase B

Well, we had some water, and came up with plan to isolate variables to troubleshoot this. The station has a back up Genset. We were going to run the pump station in the same manner, and record the same power data. But we could not get the Genset to operate. Apparently the staff has not been...

Induction Motors- PF low on Phase B

No new info. We have not been able to run the station as it only can be run when there is stormwater. This makes troubleshooting sort of hard.

Induction Motors- PF low on Phase B

Bill, Phase C Voltage is high (B to C and A to C are low), but it is only high by about 2.5 Volts. Phase C current is low relative to A,B. Phase C voltage is high by about 0.5%, but phase C current is low by about 1.5-1.8% This I can understand. But it is the rise of current in all...

Induction Motors- PF low on Phase B

Thanks for all the good input. Sorry I have not been able to follow up. Here is link to the motor data, and the test data I logged on the Fluke: Link Pump/Motor 1 is the least sensitive. Pump/Motor 2 is subject to moderate amp rise Pump/Motor 3 has the largest amp rise. When pumps 1,2,3 are...

Induction Motors- PF low on Phase B

We have a Stormwater Pump Station that is exhibiting strange behavior. *(3) 150 890 RPM 3/60/480V motors. FLA = 186 *We are at the far end of the power dist run *Pump/Motor 1 by itself runs OK. 130-140A. 483V *Add Pump/Motor 2, and the amps of Motor2 rise more than pump load indicates they...

    Thrust Stand Design

Thanks for your perspective JJ. It sounds like you may deal with some much tougher applications that this! The reason for having that radial bearing at the top is there is a potential for a temporary upthrust, of about 10-20% of the normal steady state downthrust. The fit on that bearing to...

    Thrust Stand Design

I am hoping for some experienced feedback on a thrust stand design for a vertical pump application Axial Load = 22,000# steady state down (there is a change of 0-5 second upthrust, up to 3,000# during start up) RPM = 510 Radial Loads at each shaft end = minimal. Mainly due to misalignment and...

    Simple CAN Bus Module Needed

Thanks IR....those are exactly the sort of devices I am looking for.
