    Best FEA/modeling for solid/shell combinations

Very interesting read, thanks! Our local Ansys agent has arranged to come to our office to demo the package using our CAD files, and especially with handing solid/shell interfaces. Looking forwards to it!

    Best FEA/modeling for solid/shell combinations

Thank you for all your tips! I have booked onto an Ansys workshop and will get a 30 day free trial. I think i need to dig out my old FE university notes too...

    Best FEA/modeling for solid/shell combinations

Yes, burying several "rows" of the shell nodes into the solid and ensuring that the nodes of the shell and solid are connected. As you say, its not a magic fix but at least there should be no hinge between the parts. The thing is, coming back to my original question, what would be a good...

    Best FEA/modeling for solid/shell combinations

Would it be possible to 'embed' the nodes at the ends of shells so that they are bonded with the nodes of the solids at the interface? There will still be no rotational DOF but would the connection of the displacement DOFs provide a better way of tranferring out of plane bending into the shells?

    Best FEA/modeling for solid/shell combinations

Thanks for the tips guys and it is indeed an effect that I have noticed with some of the results from the specialist company we use. They have never told us that there could be issues with the stresses calculated in the joints which is somewhat disappointing. It could well be a question of the...

    Best FEA/modeling for solid/shell combinations

Hello. We are a small company that designs amusement park ride structures and mechanisms. Up until now we have outsourced all our FEA work, but now we want to bring this in house. We are using SolidWorks 2006 but recently we have been investigating the upgrade to SolidsWorks 2010+Simulation. A...

    Quick release mechanism

Thanks for all your replies! The device is a brake on a amusement ride. The brake is a non-contact magnetic brake which consists of a 1.5m long reaction plate which is brought close to the vehicle mounted magnet. The reaction plate is held up to the vehicle using springs (required so that the...

    Quick release mechanism

Hello. Does anyone know of a company that manufactures quick release mechanisms that can be incorporated into other devices? It would need to be able to hold loads up to 10kN, before releasing them on a given signal. The mechanism will be required to operate every 40 seconds over an operating...

    Design of vibrating amusement ride

Thanks for your replies. The platform is a simple construction. Its 13ft x 6.5ft and is supported with a Firestone Airstroke airspring at each corner. The motor is located midway along the platform . The passengers stand on the platform in two rows of 6. The airsprings indeed have a non-linear...

    Design of vibrating amusement ride

Hi. Im designing an amusement device which consists of a platform that will be suspended on 4 inflated vibration isolators. Underneath the platform is a motor with an eccentric weight. Passengers (up to 12 people) will stand on the platform and the motor will be driven in bursts, at various...

    TMS-80 Forged steel wheel

Hello. Can anyone provide any information about TMS-80 steel? We have to provide some parts for a machine from some old drawings, and one of the parts is specified as TMS-80 forged steel wheels. Can anyone point me in the direction of the material properties for this steel? Also, does anyone...

    Ball and socket joint manufacturer?

Does anyone know of a manufacturer of heavy duty ball and socket joints that are suitable for outdoor use? I have recently seen them used on a relatively low key pedestrian bridge and couldnt imagine that they were specially machined just for that. We want to use them top and bottom of a...

    Underwater wheel

Thanks to everyone for their help [thumbsup2]. Im looking into getting rid of the wheels altogether, and replacing them with some form of low-friction sliding bearing. This would give more scope for using material that might be slightly hydroscopic, but for which the lower contact stress of a...

    Underwater wheel

I dont really have a size limitation per se, at the moment I have assumed a diameter of 250mm and a width of 60mm. Both can be increased if required. A safety shoe will probably take some of the load off the wheel during the loading phase, but the problem is that I cant be totally sure it will...

    Underwater wheel

Hello all. I am currently designing a turntable that must operate underwater, but I am having a great deal of difficulty in finding a suitable support wheel. The wheel must take a load of 22kN and must be able to be continually submerged in freshwater. I have looked at stainless steel but the...
