Is maximum vibrated density really a maximum density?

Thanks DamMan for your reply. Is your one point Proctor test performed dry or close to optimum moisture content?

Very soft soil but high relative compaction?

If mixing is a problem, you are very likely to have at least three types of soils, which are silty sand, seabed fines and the mixtures of these two materials. I think you have to use three sets of proctor valus, either assumed according to experience or tested to assess your compaction control.

Is maximum vibrated density really a maximum density?

I did a few maximum vibrated density tests using the ASTM procedure on the cohesionless soils ranging from well sorted to well graded but the results seemed low to varialbe degrees if compared with the Proctor values for the same samples. Usually the proctor values go well with the field density...

    Cobbles in PSD graph

With reference to the ASTM specification on testing the extremely coarse soils, the test sample size needs to be about 100 times(with an accuracy of within 1%)the weight of the largest particle existing to be representitive.

    Liquid Limit

It does not look like a simpe question to me. If a soil is clssified as no plastic, it means that it is not plastic at any water content. How can a liquid limit be defined without a plastic state. A non plastic soil may behave like a liquid when liquified. However, that is due to the rise in...

    Working with Multiple Projects

If one project can affect another one, I think it would be better to combine these two projects into one big project.

Testing Procedures or Specifications on The Rip-Rap

Thank you all for your reply. I am now using ASTM D5519-94 for the Riprap materials test.

Testing Procedures or Specifications on The Rip-Rap

My question is: Are there any written testing methods, procedures or specificaitons for the rip rap and gabion materials. Thank you in advance.

    embankment settlement

I don't think you have offered enough information for a satisfatctory answer. 1. Is the soft clay located in the foundation of the embankment or in the embankment itself? The embankment will settle as the soft clay is consolidated either in the foundation or the embankment. however, the method...

    Concrete statistical analysis

Thank you again for your help. The specification of the project requires two cylinders be broken, so I just follow it. The "trouble" cylinders were not expected. The low strength cylinders are more representive of the concrete at the spot where the lowest strength core was taken. That core was...

Concrete cylinders do not gain strength as expected

Thank you all for your responses. They have helped me a lot with a complete analysis of the test. A very possible factor for the issue is that the concrete was not mixed thoroughly in the concrete truck, as shown by the difference in strength between the cores taken. It was different between...

    Concrete statistical analysis

A concrete test requires at least two cylinders being broken, of which the average is used. During a concrete testing on a project, I got a low strength result from a pair of cylinders on the 7 day break. As it was very low, I just broke one cylinder on the 28 day break and save the last one...

Concrete cylinders do not gain strength as expected

Thank you, BigH, for your response. The 4 cylinders were cured in the lab tank as per CSA procedures as all other cylinders. The tests on the other cylinders indicate that the strengths between the 7 day's break and the 28 day's break agree with each other. In other words, if the strength is...

Concrete cylinders do not gain strength as expected

Recently, I did a concrete test and it did not turn out as I expected. The test consisted of a group of 4 cylinders, two of which were tested on day 7 and the other two on day 28. The average compressive strength was 22 mpa for the day 7 break, but only 25 mpa for the day 28 break. From tests...

Proctor testing of 3/4" clean stone

I think the maximum vibrated density is to be used in this case. However, it does not always work in reality. I did a few maximum vibrated density test for the similiar materials by the dry method, and the results turned out to be quite low(the wet method may yield higher density). There was no...
