I've come across a reference to the above steel. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between 20MnCr5E and the 'ordinary' 20MnCr5 I am familiar with?? TIA Peter

At the size of motor being considered you usually get 200% full load torque at startup when started direct on line. Covers a multitude of starting inefficiencies, especially when used with a fluid coupling between the motor and gearbox.

I use all manner of couplings, including gear couplings. The ratings for the couplings I get from the manufacturers rather than try to do it myself.

Just a thought, if you want to compare the hardness why not use a Vickers test?

My memory is that UNC and UNF were post-WW2 standards when the UK was still looking West to the US and Canada. However in the late 1960's the UK started looking East to Europe and metricated.

EN24 is a well known UK steel. It is commonly available in "condition T", meaning it has been heat treated to give a tensile strength of 55/65 T/in2 Depending on ruling section and heat treatment it can achieve 100 T/in2, "condition Z". We use condition T for shafts.

But did anyone take any notice of them. We tend to ignore them and if we get a Patent Agents letter just send back proof of prior art.

If you have an idea but can't afford to patent it, publish it so putting it in the public domain. At least that stops anyone else patenting it, or if they do they end up with a worthless patent.

Get a copy of Scan2CAD v8 that includes conversion of PDF's.
