    Trouble shooting aids.

I had considered just replacing the IC's. I suspect that they are in sockets for a reason. I have not seen any evidence of the board being resoldiered so I suspect that they just swap those out. The reason that the repairs are so expensive is they use the repair cost to lower the up front...

    What's the Future of Engineers?

DaveViking, COOL!! Someone else who can actually mention the name L. Sprague de Camp!! My favorite author, sadly you are correct in that Crichton has him beat in the monetary department.

Thanks SuperE. I have used a Huntron Tracker when I was in the Navy as well. Was hoping for a better method than easter-egging though. Will have to see. And thanks

    Walking on Wireways?

I have never worked at a facility that allowed us to walk on the cableways. We sometimes did for short stretches to reach something that was out of reach from the ladder but it was very frowned upon on only done on the weekends. It could have resulted in a write up. Especially if it was done...

    Trouble shooting aids.

The boards are two sided conductors for the most part. The cards in question, that are really expensive to repair and therefore the ones that I am interested and willing to try doing in house, are only about 10 different cards. They are used in alot of the equipment though. If there was...

    Trouble shooting aids.

I wish we had a real option, busbar. Our purchasing dept. is notoriously closed minded. They ALWAYS buy from the cheapest bidder. We have an amazing array of sensors and equipement because they will not specify in contracts the maker of sensors for future equipement. Every company gets to...

    Trouble shooting aids.

At the company that I work for, we have several cards that go bad routinely. It costs us anywhere from $2k to $10k to have repaired. These are fixed prices independent of the what is broken. I know these are standard practices regardless of the industry, but I would like to try and do the...

Wireless Remote for activating a 120VAC contactor

Also, if the load is less than about 15 Amps, X-10 and Radioshack have some wireless remotes.

    CELERON 1.7GHZ VERSES PENTIUM4 1.7GHZ

Electrifier, Based upon your description of the work the computer will be used for.....I would recommend the you simply get a Celeron processor with as much RAM as you can afford. Ya, your L2 cache is bigger in a P-4, and there is a slight speed difference running CAD. But, the driving factor...

Measuring inductance with DC amps flowing through

Check the date of the first post. He has probably figured it out by now or has given up.

    Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand

I also enjoyed "The Existentials Pleasures of Engineering". Also, another one that I have found useful to keep in mind at work is the book "Fish".

    Transcient filters

Thank you very much for all the help. We are now looking at different manufactures. Actually locating the TVSS in the enclosure will not be a problem. We are using large enlcosures (7 feet by 10 feet is typical) for all of our control cabinets. Thanks again.

    Transcient filters

Thank you peebee. Any recommendations that you could make about the companies? The equipement that we are damaging is used to generate a 300Vdc, nothing too difficult. But when trouble shooting this, we have to drop power because the power supplies do not have an off switch.

    Transcient filters

Thanks, those look good. We just found out the damage is around $10k for new power supplies from one incident alone.
