This is how I always do my Pattern to be able to ad features later on.
1. Select your feature to be patterned
2. Also select a trash-feature by multiselect (could be any one, it is just temporary)
3. Create your pattern with both the features
4. Delete the trash-feature from the...
In R10 you're able to import the joints from the sub-assemblies.

If you don't have Tubing or Piping Design, the far easiest way is the use points and P o l y l i n e.
CREATE
1. Create you point where you want your bends (coordinates)
2. Press the Polyline icon under 'Spline' in Wirefram&Surface (or GSD)
3. Select the point and enter a radius for every bend...
An other way is to include some code in the shortcut icon that opens CatiaV5.
