In the past I’ve also considered a ‘block shear’ failure mode where the line is through the adjacent cell wall at the thinnest point.
I would also add plugs to your detail to avoid over/ under filling the cell. Consider a non shrink flowable grout as opposed to dry pack.
Hello All,
I had a thought whilst on a recent site visit that a 360 camera on a pole might be a useful alternative to going up a ladder with a camera. I’ve seen them used to generate fly throughs (matterport or procore etc) but not specifically for surveys.
Does anyone use one? And do you find...
Good Morning All,
I have a project whereby I've been asked to produce calculations for a rockwool filled sandwich panel for a building. I have a product datasheet for the capacity and deflection limits from the Manufacturer but the Client is after a bespoke calculation :)
Does anyone have any...
Another way I would recommend is to network with other Engineers/ Consultants locally to you. I have had some 'overflow' work passed on from other firms and generally find that larger firms will pass on some of the more obscure jobs as it would be too time intensive for them to take on.
I also...
Is the door used as a means of escape (i.e. fire door?) - you might also want to look at a horizontal barrier load, similar to a handrail, as an additional case.
This sounds pretty interesting!
It's not something I've put any formal design numbers to and would anticipate there to be a lot of nuance with the design approach. From memory, I've seen a TV or YT video showing the build of a large treehouse, they used special engineered bracketry to attach to...
I've designed an almost identical staircase in the past, and I used all hand calculations to get the job done.
For the glass design, my reference was this textbook: https://www.istructe.org/resources/guidance/structural-use-glass-buildings/
Which covers hand calculations for balustrades etc. A...
I haven't used RSTAB only RFEM, but assuming the pedigree is the same I'm sure it will be very useful. They do offer a fairly long trial period, so might be worth downloading a copy to try out. Being probably the only company remaining that offers a perpetual licence was one of the main reasons...
Hi All,
I was listening to a podcast where some software developers were discussing their 'tech stack'. Meaning the various bits of software they use in their day to day to undertake their work. This got me thinking that every structural engineer I talk to uses different tools and resources to...
Dlubal has a large database across EU sections: https://www.dlubal.com/en/cross-section-properties/
I know you can export PDF pages but not sure about excel.
I'm not sure if you have availability of these over in the states, but I would typically specify multiple 'box' lintels

If you then need to pick up the outer leaf of masonry, a beam with a plate to the bottom would work on the outside.
