    1970's Metal Deck

I am looking at a building built in 1972 which references 20 Ga. galvanized composite metal deck. Does anyone know what yield strength of deck was likely being used around the east coast at this time?

    Existing unreinforced masonry options?

Could you possibly shotcrete the inside face of the CMU wall at certain locations and use these sections at the LFRS? You would likely need to dowel the shotcrete wall to the exisitng masonry, and would need to develop drag struts to get the loads to these walls as well. Maybe better stiffness...

    Overdriven nails in wood sheathing

APA has a technical topic on the subject, TT012-A. You can get as a free download at www.apawood.org, but you will have to register to get it. In short if all nails are less than 1/16" overdriven in dry conditions, things are OK. You can also have up to 20% of the perimeter nails up between...

Help Identify this unusual steel joist

I don't know all the in's and out's of what happened at that particular location, but if I recall correctly NYS had mandated that all schools with that type of bar joists be inspected. I have not heard of any recent issues with the joists fabricated with hat channels, but whenever I see a roof...

Help Identify this unusual steel joist

I have seen similar joists in Southern NY with a similar age of construction. The use of the hat channel chords was used in that era. I believe that they were a standard SJI joist. I would suggest sending the measurements and photos to SJI (they have an online submittal form for identifying...

    Continuous Footing for Garage

Does the rest of the garage use a foundation wall and footing? If so, you are only looking at minimal cost for additional concrete. If the entire foundation uses a downturned slab refer the code official to details R403.1(1) and R403.1.3.2 for typical down turned slab details.

Lag Screw Shear Values, 1991 NDS vs. 2005 NDS

I believe that the change occurred in the 2001 edition of the NDS. The change stemmed from the increased use of reduced body and fully threaded lag screws. Using the fully threaded lags, the shear plane would obviously be within the threaded portion of the fastener. Prior to 2001 the...

If you have the depth a 4X2 metal plate connected wood truss works.

    Diaphragm Connection With Joists

As SteelPE said, you have to make sure your intent is clear, and the deck erector is aware that he may have to cut his deck to make sure the flute aligns with the tube.

Insulation required for frost protected shallow foundation

As indicated by Splitrings get a copy of ASCE 32-01, it provides information regaring the amount and type of insulation required. You will need to insulation under the entire area, and fill above the insulation with non-frost susceptible fill. The theory, I believe, is that the soil below the...

    Diaphragm Connection With Joists

The joist seats can transfer a certain amount of the diaphragm load, but once you reach that limit you need to provide an alternate method. I typically use 2 1/2" square hss members welded to the girder between joist seats.

    Structural Analyis Software Recommendation

Chalk up another vote for RISA. Abusement: I haven't personally used it but RISA has a floor module you can use for multistory applications, automatic load generation etc. Works hand in hand with RISA 3D. I have a couple colleagues who use the program and have heard no complaints.

Parapet Considerations for ASCE 7 Snow Load Calc

I don't have a copy of it anymore so I cannot confirm, but didn't the "Guide to the use of Snow Load provisions based on ASCE 7-" discuss the use of walls in reducing the drift effect on adjacent roofs, or am I mis-remembering? Personally, I would not count on it since who knows if this item...

    concrete deterioration

Freeze-Thaw cycles? You may want to consider petrographic testing to see if that sheds any light on the situation. It can also help in determinine the depth of effective deterioration. Is is just the deterioration of concrete and delamination of the paint? Are there any deeper issues such as...
