    suspension settings affect on hydroplaning

I wouldn't expect any suspension improvements to compensate for "nearly shot tires".

    suspension settings affect on hydroplaning

7 degrees of negative camber? Wow. Hydroplaning...dunno. Technically, 7 degrees ought to reduce the size of the contact patch thereby reducing hydroplaing. However, this condition might not allow the tire to work as designed. I suggest a more reasonable camber value...1.5 degrees feels...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Warpspeed, I've been a fan of red since about 6 years old. I had an opportunity to be at Fiorno last year to watch a 2005 F1 shake down test...wow - I am in awe! Controlling one of those things takes a wee bit of talent. Okay, yes, I get it now. Wheel tate, and, aero forces too, yes? michael

Scrub forces at the contact patch

I sorted of expected road tires to be more compliant than race tires. My experience is very limited with near race DOT tires. These posses very stiff side walls, however. F1 tires... Michael

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Greg, That reads counter-intuitive. How come? Michael

Scrub forces at the contact patch

"This causes some distortion at the bearing as the wheel is turned." I mean the strut bearing, not the hub bearing.

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Joest, I am an amateur for sure. But the notion that the most perfect set-up may be spoiled by some silly contact patch is certainly not lost by my brain. ...I tend to think Ferrari's trouble this year (may) have had something to do with tires. I am left to the but dyno and my hands. The...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Joest, Warpspedd, I'm actually running a new set of tires that are stickier than the previous set, but are curiously softer in the sidewall. This requires greater steering input for the same level of grip. Slip angles aside, these are quite comliant to my feel. I know this is sort of...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Okay, I was definately on another tangent...no pun. I understand; if I construct a triangle depicting all the angles connected, larger tires raise the vehicle causing the base to become wider. Got it! But unfortunately, you've put me onto something else. I assume that as a wheel is turned...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Greg, Joest, Thank you very much. Your replies have given me a better understanding for the 'things' I can change and the 'things' I must live with. I must live with more than I would like, but the learning process is a welcome bonus. Michael Warpspeed, I'm not sure I understand...when you...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Greg, I imagine lateral tire deflection will affect scrub as well, sort of interesting. I know I began the topic about scrub...do mechanical trail/caster affect scrub in either of their extremes? By affect I mean do they alter feel? I'm trying to get pure information thru the steering wheel...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Greg, The original offset is 44mm and the BBS wheels are 38mm. I think I understand the rationale behind avoiding zero scrub...with a production strut based car...a little negative or a little positive is a good...preferably positive as an aid to feel? As a tire with zero scrub is turned...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Thank you Fabrico. So, changing camber will affect the height of the axle above the ground too - with a strut?

    Optimal damping

"The other part is to balance the car front and rear, to make sure the dampers work together and not create any strange pitching feeling." See, to me this adds another layer to the black art, and I completely get it. But should some cycling info be built into the damper before the black art...

Scrub forces at the contact patch

Thank you Greg. Let me put the first question into perspective. My 05 Mini cooper has a (Mac)strut front end. I purchased a set of BBS wheel with a 38mm offset. The acceptible offset range I'm told is between the high 30s and high 40s...seems like a lot to me. 44mm seems to be the accepted...
