It's from a European vendor, so it could be a European alloy. We're trying to understand what we were supplied so we can look up the material properties, and the vendor is not responding to requests. The parts are newish, supplied over the past decade or so.
I'm trying to identify an aluminum alloy. Per the mass spec, it's 0.25% magnesium and 99.75% aluminum. (There are trace amounts of oxygen, carbon, and tungsten, but I assumed those were oxidation or residue from the cutting tools and discounted them.) The only alloys I can find that contain...
Excellent point. I was unclear and maybe wrong in my description of the problem.
D = nominal inside diameter of the vessel shell at point of attachment = 23.5"
So the inner surface of the head can deviate + 0.294 / - 0.147.
Nominal *radius* of inside surface of torispherical head is 24"...
I procured a number of smaller pressure vessels with torispherical heads. On QC, some of the heads are out of tolerance. The inside radius is nominally 24 in, allowed to be up to 24.3 per Sec 8 Div 1 UG-81, and actually measures up to 24.5. I would rather just use these if there's a way to...
Weldstan, thank you, that is interesting.
SnTMan, we're updating an old design to be BPVC compliant. It currently has lap joints with fillet welds to allow adjustability.
I'm looking for some guidance on UNF-19 (a), which forbids fillet welds in shells or heads of titanium vessels. Does anyone know the reason for this? We're having to implement some awkward workarounds, and without knowing the reason for avoiding fillet welds, I'm not even sure if our...
Thanks for the clarification. Can you tell me the reasoning for requiring a certain temper from the raw material rather than just the part after its in service?
We are designing a part and trying to clarify for our suppliers and vendors what parts are allowable under Section 2 Part D. I have read the intro, and don't see any explanation about when the temper and thickness given in the charts apply. Is this the temper and thickness of the raw material...
I think you need Section II, not Section VIII. Since I happen to be working with SA-240 / 304 now, I can tell you the allowable is 20 ksi from -20 to 100 F. The code does not go below -20 in the table.
Thanks for the detailed answer. You're right, I should clarify. I was confused by the "no size or thickness limitation is given in the stress table." The next sentence sounds like it's contradicting that by saying that there is no maximum thickness limit as long as the material meets the...
I am analyzing a component in accordance with the BPVC, which I am not very familiar with, and I'm stuck on practically the first paragraph. UG-4 says materials subject to pressure stress shall conform to Section II, Part D, Subpart 1, Tables 1A, 1B, and 3, which list material properties. In...
I should add -- the system has to conform to B31.9 only due to bureaucratic requirements. There is no question that the design is safe and functional as-is. Thanks.
I am checking a pressure system to ensure that it meets the requirements of B31.9 The system has a number of unlisted components. These are probably perfectly adequate components, and we are using them within the manufacturers' ratings, but they were not designed to the specs listed in Table...
