3D metal printing and the ASME code

Metengr: Do you have the code case number or a pdf copy of it? Was it for B31.1? TGS4: I will send you an email to hopefully get in contact with the right people!

3D metal printing and the ASME code

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with using 3D metal printed parts in ASME B31.3 or Section VIII Division 1 work? Are there any special requirements regarding qualifying the material and allowable stress values? I'm trying to find any information but can't seem to find any.

ASME VIII Div. 1 Appendix 2-2(d)(1)

I would interpret UG-14 to mean flanges even 4" NPS and below cannot be machined from hot rolled bar or forged bar. Which is a common statement in SA-182, SA-105, and SA-961. So it would appear the ASME is trying to follow the current material specifications. But Appendix 2 appears to...

ASME VIII Div. 1 Appendix 2-2(d)(1)

But UG-14(b) restricts the use of rod or bar for all flange types and via UG-6(b) forged bar would appear to have the same limitations. Also Appendix 2-2(a): "(a) Materials used in the construction of bolted flange connections shall comply with the requirements given in UG-4 through UG-14."...

ASME VIII Div. 1 Appendix 2-2(d)(1)

Hi, I'm hoping someone can explain this to me as I can't figure it out! ASME VIII Div. 1 Appendix 2-2(d) states: "(d) Fabricated hubbed flanges shall be in accordance with the following: (1) Hubbed flanges may be machined from a hot rolled or forged billet or forged bar. The axis of the...

    qualified base metal thickness

I agree with David. I think a closer interpretation would be here (IX-80-67) Link The governing thickness would be the 3/8", "set-on" the shell.

    ASME IX QW-466.1

Hi, I'm just wondering if I'm interpreting this correctly. if your base metal elongation is greater than 20% and the thickness of your test coupons is 0.119, 0.294 (nominal from pipe), and 0.375" you would need to create a test jig for each thickness?

    316 & 316L

You could use code case 2577 for section VIII division 1 which allows 316L up to 1200F.

    Appendix 41 - external pressure

    I was reviewing my taylor forge documents and realized that for the operating case the bolt load in an external pressure case would be written Wm1e=Hp-H = 2 x b x 3.14 x G x m x Pe - 3.14 / 4 x G^2 x Pe for G <= 8 x m x b, for G > 8 x m x b Wm1e = 0. t= G x sqrt((0.3 x Pe)/(S x E) + (1.9 x...

    Appendix 41 - external pressure

Thanks for the reply! A little off track but for a external pressure thickness calculation for a blind flange, you could use UG-34(c)(2) eq. 2 modified by 2-11? I think the below would be correct, you only modify the gasket seating load by the W value in 2-11. t= G x sqrt((0.3 x Pe)/(S x E) +...

    Appendix 41 - external pressure

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew if ASME Section VIII Division 1 Appendix 41 can be used for external pressure calculations? The definition of P in Appendix 41 is design pressure and does not refer to internal or external as it does in UG-34 (UG-34 is only for internal pressure, see...

Checked ASME B16.9 end caps per UG-81 (ASME VIII Div. 1)

I was just going over UG-81(d) for out of roundness of the skirt and comparing it to the tolerances in B16.9 table I-12 for out of roundness. For a 10" cap, 1% X 10.75" = 0.11" permitted out of roundness for UG-81(d), but per table I-12 the allowed out of roundness is 0.16"+0.12"=0.28". Am I...

Checked ASME B16.9 end caps per UG-81 (ASME VIII Div. 1)

Hi, I did come across this: Link Would having a head template be the best approach to verify a ASME B16.9 end cap for a code vessel to fulfill UG-90(a)(9) requirements? It's a little confusing with UG-44 and UG-11(c), which allow ASME product standards to be used in code vessels and are...

ASME VIII Div. 1 SA-193 Traceability

Well I did find a reference interpretation for standard pressure parts unfortunately studs aren't in there. Apparently CMTRs are not required for flanges, B16.9 fittings, B16.11 fittings, and pipe! If I could only find the requirement for studs!!! Any comments on the below interpretation...
