Find load at fracture for beam

Is it possible to predict the load at fracture for a simple FEA beam with some certainty using linear FEA package? For example, I am interested in finding the bracketed range of forces that could produce a failure of a cantilevered beam that is fixed on one end and a concentrated force on the...

How well does FEA predict real world

IR Stuff, What inputs are you referring too? Loads or Restraints or Mesh or Material Properties? Could you define failing miserably? What methods do you use to predict deflections then, experimental such as strain gages, etc?

Gage R&R with only one operator using JMP

Thank you Melone, I will try that. I am in the process of re-doing the measurements. Also, have you heard of a gage verification study? I was reading a new paperbook titled, "all about six sigma" about the authors opinion about how a gage verification study may be a good option versus a gage...

Generating a helix around a radius in SW

I was hoping to get a x,y,z curve based off of some mathematical equation and do a sweep of those points. Rgrayclamps, Are you saying that if you start with triangle or diamond shapes when you hit the flex feature, the shapes will distort and become round? I am confused.

How well does FEA predict real world

fkmeyers, Could you explain coupon testing? Are you referring to standard tensile bars? Thanks.

Generating a helix around a radius in SW

Does anyone know how to properly model a compression spring that is placed in a cavity that bends the spring to the cavity shape? I cannot get the sweep with twist to work properly or the flex or deform functions. Has anyone ran into this problem?

Gage R&R with only one operator using JMP

Yes thank you melone. I am aware of the 3-10-3 idea. Our application involves a CMM machine that is automatically doing the measurement. Only one operator will be running the machine. Could JMP calculate the Repeatability section using only 1 operator? I know this has been encountered in...

How well does FEA predict real world

We test a variety of our plastic molded parts for our product, and I am usually within 20% on displacement, we have not tried to find the stress with strain gauges. Are any of your experiences with molded plastic parts, filled with glass or no glass fibers? If so, did you predict the...

Good reference book for Gage R&R

Could anyone please direct me to a good text reference on Gage R&R's?

Gage R&R with only one operator using JMP

For example, I measure the width 3 gage blocks, 1.000", 2.000", and 3.000". I measure them 10 times each and repeat it once as the same operator. I would like to know the amount of the tolerance that is being taken up in my measurement? I would calculate the P/T ratio. Do I have to repeat my...

How well does FEA predict real world

Has anyone validated their predicted FEA stresses or displacements with simulated testing? If for example, you wanted to validate the deflection of a simple rectangular cantilevered beam, how close could you predict displacement? Within 20%, assuming of course you accounted for infinite...

Generating a helix that follows a defined radius

Arlin, Thanks. I cannot wait until SW2005 ships. Maybe I will not need a PHD in math to generate this helix after all!

Generating a helix that follows a defined radius

I would like a generate a helix that follows a defined radius. This helix will be used to generate a compression spring using a sweep. I would like an equation that I could modify based on input variables (pitch, length, radius, angle of radius, etc) that would give me (x,y,z) points that I...

    Modeling a curved compression spring

I need to model a helical compression spring that is going around a curve. As of now, I have modeled the spring as a tube, one sweep feature. Is there a way to do this? I was thinking of using 3D points, and then sweeping the points. I do not know how to generate the 3D points though. Also...

FEA Methodology for plastic snap locks

Could someone please tell me if my design methodology is correct for checking the stress and deflection of snap locks for plastic. 1) Model up the snap beam 2) Apply material (yield strength, modulus of Elast. from vendor sheets) 3) Apply constraints, loads, mesh. 4) Run FEA. 5) Check...
