You may get better success if you know what your dealing with. Depending on the contamination and the site specifics, the microorganisms can be very different. There are labs that can profile your biomass. Once you know what you've got you may be able to target the bad actors.
Are you sure it's Pseudomonas bacteria? We had a system that was clogging and ran Phospholipid fatty acid and DNA tests in order to understand the culture.

I'll agree a balance is good. I think most schools are just too cheap to do the practical end. In a fraction of the classroom time a theory can be demonstrated. I think it's the cost that drives most programs more into theory.
