IMHO, Bathe's book is just a confusing bundle of notation and arachaic definition. It is definitely only for those who want to study the history of FEA !

There is a new book by Babuska and Strouboulis. It has very good mathematical foundations of FE theory.

I am guessing that 2 years from now NX version will be much better than the MSC version. Louis Komszik, Tom Kowalski et al who were at MSC and later in SAS are now working on NX version.
