Replacement for 480Y to 300Y sensing transformer

A german built control panel used in the states has a 3 phase, 480 volt wye to 300 volt wye, 15VA transformer used for voltage sensing. Lower power application. This transformer is bad, no MFG markings. Not sure where to get one. Instrument transformers wants $600 and 20 days. Looking for...

    Underload Generators?

    1. Can we run the prime power to 110% its capacity? 110% is possible, but not suggested. Most generators have some headroom, but you may have warranty issues. 2. Is it safe to assume that our utility provider has left some switchgears unmetered (i know this sounds funny)? You can put a...

    Transformer bushing spacing in oil?

transformer oil is about 35kV breakdown for 1/8" gap. Most 12.47kv transformers I have seen have abourt 12" or more spacing on load break elbow bushings. More for substation style or live front. Why would you be relocating the bushings on a refurb?

    Cogeneration

Engines in parallel with the utility will not vary in speed, so you need a loading control to monitor power output to bias the speed controller up or down to maintain a specified power output. Woodward is the leader in this area (at least for smaller generators). Connecting to a utility has...

PFC Capacitors on Primary Side of Transformer

chances are you would not have any harmonic res on the primary side depending on the situation.... You also would not gain the extra KVA that caps on the secondary provide. JTK

30 K Watt electric generator for wind energy

wind generators of that size- induction units or DC gens. Induction is easy if you have a power source to excite it. Any induction motor will work until you overspeed it and destroy the unit. Most wind turbines have overspeed protection/brakes. What is your question again?

    Static exciter - varistors

I will chime in here- is this a custom built exciter, or one off the shelf fitted to this application? The Basler exciter I just worked on yesterday had a blown MOV. This was applied to a brushed rotor. The MOV is in there to protect the electronic components from the outside world- whatever...

Copper Vs Stainless Steel in an Earth Mat

copper- cheaper, good conductivity, easy to weld in the field, common grounding material. Stainless- well, can't think of a reason to use it other than corrosion. JTK

    4160V motor RTD monitoring

I would suggest a product from Multilin (GE). They have the relay with RTD inputs and can be talked to through a network to log all the data and more that you seek. JTK

    HV Substation Bus Dampening Conductors

First, Do we have to use ACSR? Or will AAC work? What about the newer conductors available ACCC? I don't think I would use ACSR. We use AAC Second, Are the above min. sizes ok? and what is the max. size? Those sizes seem very large. Third, Is the dampening characteristic...

    BATTERY EXPLOSION

we have seen problems with broken joints, bad plates, etc causing arcing or other problems. You may have to do a full inspection and load check to find further problems. JTK

simulate a current using an electronic circuit

What kind of current are we talking about? I assume 0 to 5 amps, but you also need to know the burden. accuracy is also an issue. What are you using it for? You could borrow the relay test sets that your utility is sure to have and not have to make one. JTK

    Pumped Storage

    Pumped Storage

deke1 is correct (can't comment on the pony motor). I live about 40 minuts from the Ludington, MI pumped storage facility on Lake Michigan. Cool site. JTK

    2-phase AC motors?

That sync method is different and sort of cool. I once was setting the speed of a slow turning horiz shaft hydro with a flourecent light fixture- worked just like a timing light. JTK
