    Rad NDT exposure time

The Exposure time is only one part of the time necessary to perform the inspection. The bulk of the time is set-up and tear down of radiation barriers, joint layout, film exposure, re-shots, etc.

    NB-2540 examination of forgings

The acceptance criteria for NB-2540 inspections is a loss of back reflection. No calibration blocks are needed for a loss of back reflection inspection. If you have non-parallel surfaces, then the provision to use a DAC curve that provides equivalent sensitivity comes into play. The specifics...

Steel mill terminology: "weld repair" - Do mills repair defects?

From the QA side, some specifications require a positive statement if no weld repairs were performed (similar to no mercury containing compounds were used during manufacturing). The mill probably chose to stick the statement on all the paper to avoid missing it on one that required it. JR97

    Specifying class for Method A

kevlar49, Solvent removable is Method C. (You are only going to do solvent removable with Type II inspections (visible)). Method A is water washable. There is no solvent remover used with water washable penetrants. Jr97

NDE UT of Forged Ring (Hollow Forging), SA-388, Reference-Block Calibration, Change in Thickness

Pressequip, As long as there isn't a significant difference in the rough machined and final machined thicknesses, the conservative approach is to cut the notches into one of each run of forgings at the rough machined thickness with the notch depth based on 3% of the final machined thickness. A...

Castings of ASTM A494 CW6MC when Radiographed, it reveals random straight lines. Why?

A.M. It sound like diffraction. Very common in Inconel welds that we radiograph. Any way you take take photo of a film in front of a viewer and post? JR97

Pneumatic pressure test at low (mbar) or higher pressure (+/- 30 barg)

samvanwesen if you are doing soap bubble testing, you want the low pressure differential across the boundary. Specs I have worked with would limit the differential to about 300mBar. If the pressure differential is too great, the soap solution will "blow out" or vaporize at a leak instead of...

    Best Free CAD software

Rick, here is another one. Solidedge. The 2D version is free to download. https://solidedge.siemens.com/en/free-software/overview/ I personally don't like it, but it meets your "free" criteria JR97

    NDT of Raw material

metboss, Also, sorry for delayed response. Perhaps what your vendor meant by a "smaller block" would be to test to a depth of, say 16" from the OD instead of the full 30". As long as their deepest test distance is greater than the center of the bar, that would be an acceptable method of...

    NDT of Raw material

metboss, I am a bit surprised they are having issues with 4130 steel. May I ask, is the diameter of the bar 30 inches or is that the axial length with a smaller diameter? If it is a smaller diameter, they may be able to test from the diameter but not the length. The straight beam inspection...

    NDT of Raw material

metboss, I believe what the sub-contractor is saying is the casting is too thick to test. You don't state the type of material, but if it is a stainless steel or a high nickel material I would agree with the sub-contractor. Using a "smaller block" is not the solution. The thickness of the...

    PSIA vs PSIG

miller863, the other posts are correct. psig is the absolute pressure offset by the atmospheric pressure which is 14.7 psi at sea level and decreases with increasing altitude. I imagine somewhere in the instrument menu structure there will be an input for atmospheric pressure (it is currently...

Miami Beach, Champlain Towers South apartment building collapse, Part 14

Is the mystery column visible in the garage walkthrough video from 2020? I get so twisted around I can't tell.

Rounded Indications vs Pinhole on Weld Surface

Appendix 8 paragraph 8.3(b) defines a rounded indication as an indication having a length to width ratio less than 3:1. Keep in mind Appendix 8 is PT criteria. The 1/16 and 3/16 dimensions mentioned are the size of the bleedout, not the size of the visible pinhole. If the pinhole has...

New member looking for a solution to a problem.

Put a pressure or flow sensor on the output of the check valve. however, most check valves will re-seat when the over pressure condition passes. You may get intermittent flow / pressure as the check valve lifts and re-seats.
