We are finishing an area around a swimming pool and one of the finishes being considered is a textured stone finish.
I was told rock salt was pressed onto the surface and then rinsed off after the concrete set up.
Any thoughts?
My concern is the long term effects: surface spalling/cracking...
Guys, thanks for the feedback.
StephenA - you bring up an interesting point. My pier is handling crude oil in and finished gasoline out. I know they got grounding cabling in differnet areas, but I wonder if they've tested the potential differences during operation.

I've got a client with a 1/4 mile pier into a brackish (salt and fresh water mix) river.
Over time, the painted steel pipe piles have started to corrode. The plant currently uses an impressed current and sacraficial anodes to protect (or reduce) the pile corrosion but this does not appear to...
While I've had situations with architects influencing good structural design, most of my experience has been in heavy industry where the structural engineer is under a more difficult microscope.
In a plant environment, the scrutiny is by plant personnel (all "experts" in steel and concrete...
Go to the library (or check online) and look up Canada's two major engineering firms, (SNC Lavalin & Dessau-Soprin). Both do work internationally.
I believe in some countries they do this work as design-build; your construction experience may help there.
As for a design library, I suggest...
Lufti,
Thanks for the suggestion. I had seen some "ground freezing" where a cement grout was injected to fix shifting soils for removal.
Just didn't occur to me for this one.

I need some suggestions............
I've got an existing refinery that some very old and very wide below grade pipe trenches.
I've got to route some new utility (power) under them (+/- 3'-0" below bottom of trench) In most areas, directional drilling will work.
In one area, I have no outlet...
Pilgrim2,
I think the term you are looking for is "seal weld" However, be aware that this does not constitute a structural weld, just a water tight seal.

For what it is worth.............
I have always seen letters for prerelease (design and design review phase) and numbers (starting with 0) for Issue for Construction (or Fabrication)

hnewton,
I've used Mr. McCormac's books for Steel Design and Structural Analysis (both 3rd editions) for nearly twenty years and never had to resort to the answer key.
Keep at it, you'll find the solutions.
If your just looking for solved problems, I'd suggest a Schaum's outline or some of...
We are replacing some equipment stacks and after a number of problems with the existing building steel we are at last down to the guy wire hold downs (deadman).
The existing stack has three single cable tiedowns with a turnbuckle connection to the deadman. The new stack will have three PAIRS...
zennis,
You may have already visited: http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&p_id=9716 to look at OSHA's staircase guidelines.
I agree with JStephen, above, however my experience in heavy industry is you can make a good case to the local building department...
mkberry,
In addition to frost, check the uplift forces from the local water table and soil conditions, if the pool is drained.
Your slab bottom is probably designed for the 5'-0" water above, how will it respond if the load is reversed and becomes 2'-0" from below?
I've owned a couple of...
