    2nd floor Garage floor load

Did you ever think about going with a prestressed hollow core concrete plank. You could use about a 8" deep plank which will support spans of 30' for a residential garage. Take a look at Spancrete. Web site: www.spancrete-sma.com

    Octagonal Roof Support

Does anyone have any experience in designing a octagonal room that can be built without the use of tie beams from wall to wall supporting a kingpost at the center of the tie beam and supporting the roof planes at the peak. I was wondering if I could use some metal braces which would be...

    Rafter Cuts on Structural Ridge

Generally you can notch a Dimensional rafter (i.e. 2 x 12) for a Load bearing Ridge no more than one-fourth the depth of the rafter used. So for a 2 x 12 that would mean a notch no deeper than 2-13/16". Note: you cannot notch a Wood-I Joist.

    Gambrel Roof Framing

When framing a gambrel roof we always use a Load Bearing Ridge Beam with Load Bearing Purlins to support a gambrel roof structure or use Collar Ties on each side of rafters at the hip joint between the upper and lower rafters. I was recently talking to a builder that had told me that he was...
