    Welding Titanium.

Don't know about the dust levels that are acceptable. At Boeing we went by the mil-specs and color standards, If it was welded in a chamber or not. I have done emergency repair work at the races in the pits. I just try to follow the usual color standards.

    Butt Weld Penetration Depth

Pipewelder covered the steel part, but on aluminum, depending on the function of the part, I've gotten complete root penetration on up to 1/4" using DC- Tig with Helium as the shield. When i did this at Northrop and Boeing it was for ground support equiptment or tooling and we still had...

    FCAW

At Northrop i ran the same Lincoln machine with a LN25 for 2 years and the only thing i changed was spools of wire. Jeff

    Vacuum assisted welding chambers?

Vacuum chambers are very expensive. In 1992 Mcdonnell Douglas paid $250,000 for one. Of course it was large, 4'x4' x8' long with a 24" loading tube that was 15' long. We welded all sorts of ti parts in these, with the longest being wing deicing ducting, for the DC9/MD 80 now 717 series...

repair of crack in steel pipe that conttains oil.

If it is possible to tig it thats what i would i would try. I repair thin wall tubing quite frequently that has had oil, Alcohol and Nitromethane in it and have had no problems by slowly preheating the start zone before adding filler rod. This works on mat. up to .125 Jeff

    4130 welding, need advice

boo1, Right you are about ER80S-D2. I brought the filler rod question to a prominent member of the NHRA/SFI chassis committee a while back and brought up that i had read about a new AWS standard that will state just what you had posted. I was told to continue using ER70s-2.(4130 tig) So in the...

    4130 welding, need advice

Merzi, Right or wrong, ALL of the top fuel dragster chassis that you see on the track today were tig welded with 70s2 wire. The engineers that have worked with the manuf. have concluded that 70s2 is more forgiving as these cars flex an incredible amount. the main rails from the driver forward...

    4130 welding, need advice

Lots of good info here guys! I build drag cars for a living and tig everything, even the 1020.I use 70s2 wire which is pretty much the industry standard for 4130 and 1020. Ive been told that if you need to mig 4130 that you can use 70s2 wire with 95% argon 5% c02 and get good results. All the...

    Literarure recommendations

For drag race applications there are standards that address the construction and welding of roll cages. while they closely follow aircraft practices in fitup and joint design the industry standard for 4130 roll cage welds is 70s-2 rod no pre or post heat of joint that is tig only by the way...

    Welding Magnesium Per Boeing Specs

That seems odd that you cant find a vendor for this. Im in so. cal. and spent time at Mdc. boeing, northrop and allied signal as a tig weldor The major vendors i remember are (that had mag qualified operators were hydromill simi valley ca. Keystone eng. l.a. ca. Psi L.a. ca. and two others...

Advantage of gas welding aluminum, over tig welding.

I worked in aerospace here in so ca. on and off since the early 80s, and up until my final layoff [dec.99] mcdonnell douglas/boeing still oxy/hydrogen welded low pressure tanks and air ducts with that process I was certified in that process and didnt consider it too difficult. When i asked our...
