I actually started in the Chemical Industry & used & built up experiences in aerospace related technologies to switch into the aerospace industry.
Many of the skills required in other industries (with modest adaptation) can be utilised in the aerospace...
In general FAR/JAR 25 size aircraft do not have ice protection on horizontal stabilizers (the wing thickness & duration time in icing) allows the manufacturer's to get away with it.

The route I use to ensure the Hill criteria is specified when writing out the Nastran .bdf file. This can be done from Patran by specifying within the failure selector card of the Materials Input, the composite failure theory is Hill.
