Difference between 11 kV submarine cable and normal cable

The charging current should almost be the same for both land cable and submarine (armored) cable with the same properties (i.e. conductor size, insulation thickness, etc.). The inductance will be different for submarine cable due to the armoring.

    Service point location

The servicing utility specification handbook typically identifies the service point. See page 29 of the attached link as an example. Link

    Advice on my Future

It all comes down to what you want. I think you learn a lot more in the field than in the office but being "on the road" can wear on you after awhile. Right now in my career I've been back in the office most of the time but I'm finding out I miss the field work after doing it on and off for +20...

    MV Cable Shield Type

I would think whatever is corroding the copper tape will also corrode the concentric conductor over time. Did the corrosion of the screen happen only once or is it an ongoing problem?

Touch shock at 345kV breaker control panel

We've had the same problem in some of our 345 & 500 stations. It's exactly what waross and ausphil explained. The problem we had was that the handle and latching bars were not bonded very well. Once we fixed the bonding (i.e. scraped off some paint at the bonding screw) there was no issues.

Transformer tank pressure test during the manufacturing

If any tests are done on site, be sure to use caution if the transformer contains a separate tap changer compartment in the main tank. It is possible to rupture the tap changer with pressure (or vacuum) if it is not applied to both at the same time.

Tripping of Transformer on Rapid Pressure Rise Relay

I've had this issue before when using "solid state" relays. Unlike a old school relay with a coil that may require a several mA for it to pick up, the "solid state" relays may only need a few uA before it picks up. Solid state relays really look at the voltage, so if the solid state relay has a...

Installation/Engineering Costs for Submersible Power Cable

After some quick back of envelope calculations, 4000ft of 3-core 12kV class 2/0 submarine cable would be about 20 tons on a drum. Depending on the cable bending radius it's possible to put 4000 ft on a ST32 (drum size) drum so it may be a simple install by floating in the cable from the land. I...

Installation/Engineering Costs for Submersible Power Cable

It sounds like this is a very specialized installation where traditional submarine cable installation can't be used because of the water depth. If this is a land locked installation (lake or quarry) transportation of the submarine cable from the factory to the installation site will also become...

Bad underground conduits in a duct bank...what can you do?

Find a company that does sewer video inspections. They'll find the problem. I've done it several times when there was trouble pulling mandrels before cable installation...

Hot Stick Lengths and Voltage Ratings for Live Line Work

Take a look at the National Electric Safety Code C2-2012 Section 441 and Table 441-1. Also IEEE 516-2003 Guide for Maint. Methods for Energized Power Lines. The "extra" length is due where the worker has to be positioned for the work (i.e. standing on the ground in a substation or reaching from...

    Access hatch to electrical room

Without seeing the situation in person just make the 3'W X 5'H hatch into a standard door size. Seems like there's enough room with a little bit of work....

Deicing tranmssion lines - skin effect

Hydro Quebec has tried anything and everything for de-icing lines, especially after the devastating Dec. 1997 ice storm. The HQ IREQ (Test) division has published several papers on the de-icing subject. They've even tried applying short circuits on the lines to knock the ice off with magnetic...

    Outdoor Transformer location

Check with the local authorities (utility, wiring inspector, fire dept., etc.) They may have some specific requirements in addition to the NEC & NESC safety requirements. Also check with the property's insurance carrier, as they my have issue with so much oil filled equipment next to the...
