That is a really promising study CastMetal, thanks for sharing. It looks like coal does have much potential for being a clean way to meet our future energy needs. It is also a good point that my assumption was using our current average emission rates, and I do expect that these will improve...
Really? Coal is cleaner than gasoline? Are you sure that an EV charged 100% by a coal fired power plant will be cleaner than a modern Tier2 Bin5 compliant vehicle?
If we estimate that an EV requires 0.25 kW/mile, and ignoring all transmission and charging losses, I figure this is roughly...
DIN 7167:1987 - Relationship between tolerances of size, form, and parallelism; envelope requirement without individual indication on the drawing.
my take after reading this standard: if the drawing is based on DIN standards and contains no reference to ISO 8015, then the envelope requirement...
Out of curiosity's sake I looked at the current course catalog from my old Uni:
MECH-100 Engineering Graphical Communication
This computer aided design and drafting course is an introduction to
engineering graphics and visualization with topics to include sketching, line

I recommend a copy of:
"Machine Design for Mobile and Industrial Applications"
by Gary W. Krutz, John K. Schueller, Paul W. Claar, II
table of contents

I refer to mine often. Used copies can be found quite easily and are relatively inexpensive.
The +/+ and -/- are typically used with fitting cylindrical parts to one another using the following types:
• RC = Running or Sliding Clearance Fit
• LC = Locational Clearance Fit
• LT = Transition Clearance or Interference Fit
• LN = Locational Interference Fit
• FN = Force or Shrink Fit

Also, I have never found composite profile tolerance shown, stated, or explained anywhere in the ISO specifications for geometrical tolerances. I think this is a very important tolerancing tool that they are missing.
One of the biggest differences I found between ASTM-1994 and ISO is Concentricity and Symmetry. The only similarity is the symbol that used on the drawing. This is just one of the many existing differences that has cause many issues for me, in addition to the envelope principle already stated...
I think the ideal solution would be a CMM creating simplified 3d models of the interfaces and common componets, 3d modeling software to create the new parts, with all of the final work fed directly into CNC manufacturing methods.
This of course comes at a high initial cost for the software and...
PGCobra,
Sorry for not getting back to your questions till now, and most likely you are already past the start of your manufacturing phase.
As Fabrico said, modern Torque Converters can multiply torque many times over. I know of some companies that have production units over 3x torque...
On a sealed Torque Converter, the risk of contaminating the Converter with debris from the drilling process greatly outweighs any benefit that the drain plug will ever have.
Stahlschlüssel (Key to Steel)
"The new 21st edition of the Key to Steel includes more than 60,000 standard designations and trade names from approximately 300 steelmakers and suppliers. Presentation is trilingual: English, French, and German. Materials covered include structural steels, tool...
I agree with ctopher, tolerances should be based on fit, form, and function. Make the tolerances as large as possible, but no larger. Tolerances should be used to ensure the parts fit together, maintain clearance/distance from other parts of the assembly, and that everything functions.
Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I find little comfort in knowing that I have not been alone in finding problems with this ISO 2768 General Tolerance. I also find myself getting a little wound up any time this standard is mentioned or referenced, and being the only EU foreigner in...
I am not quite confident in your loading inputs:
600 ft-lbs ("your" stated engine torque) x 2 (TC stall ratio) x 2.48 (trans 1st gear ratio) = >2900 ft-lbs
as for impact loading, the Torque Converter should absorb a good portion of any shock loading that is subjected to the system apon...
