Hi All.
Great forum.
I am trying to write a spreadsheet to tell me a combination of available gears to put in a gear train given a desired gear ratio.
The setup will be a compound gear train. I will write a different program to try and solve for 3 gears, 4 gears (common lay shaft).
I am...
Hi All,
What a wonderful site this is! Thanks for being a great community.
I would like to make a permanent magnet at the end of a piece of 4130 hollow bar about 1/2" OD.
Is it possible to make a reasonable permanent magnet on the end of this tube?
I have no idea of how this would be...
Thanks for the replies.
I cannot yet find a supplier of small (approx 5mm) round bar in 4140, but can in 4130, hence my question.
How hard can 4130 be made?
Regards, Iain.
Hi,
Can someone inform me on how hard I can make 4130 bar?
How is this achieved best? I need to harden the end of a 3/16" rod so that repeated striking on the head of a nail does not deform it. Should I be using a different material like 4140?
Regards, Iain.
Hi.
I am after a hollow bar with about a 5mm bore and something around a 15mm OD.
Can anyone suggest who makes such a product as hollow bar stock?
Preferably in a higher grade than mild steel.
I am also looking for a steel rod in about 5mm that is not mild steel. Something like 4140 might...
Hi Guys,
I am sure this is a simple question for those in the know.
I am doing a one off job that requires mig welding of aluminium. The welding is fine but I want to clean them up, but mostly the black soot like surface that surrounds them.
I know I can wire brush it with a hand stainless...
Thanks everyone.
My stick welding is very clean. There is no wire brushing necessary at all. The only reason I use to wire brush is to burnish the heat treatment colors. My welds are clean and bright, there is however a heat treatment band along side the welds.
I am considering a Sulfuric acid...
Hi All.
Thanks for your comments.
Edstainless.
You are suggesting that I wire brush the welds and then citric acid dip the whole object?
Is there a process I can add before to remove the 'colors' from the welding process?
Regards, Iain.
Hi Steve ad others,
Steve, thanks for the reply.
The stainless steel needs to appear reasonably good but most importantly, it needs to be corrosion resistant. I am thinking of changing to 316 base material as well. So I need to ensure the welds have the same resistance to corrosion as the base...
Hi All,
I am after some specific advice on post weld treatment of stainless steel.
I am stick welding 304 S.S. plate (3mm) with 316 electrodes.
I want to pickle and passivate these parts.
I have access chemicals to make up my own solutions etc and would like to do so.
I think I can...
This product needs to be already available in something similar to the self adhesive foam strips that I purchase at present. My manufacturer has a great range of materials to choose from but no data on friction coefficients.
This is some of there range-...
Thanks to you all for your comments.
This is a seal around the internal diameter of something similar to a lid. The part has a machined internal groove to take the seal. This then slides over a turned taper and then along the side of the pipe (as extruded) for a very short distance.
Might...
Sorry, Should have been more specific.
Having found out what materials have low CF, I would then search around for someone who does or can make this into 12 wide, 3 thick strip and apply an adhesive to it.
Regards, Iain.
Hi,
I am looking for a material to use as a seal. It needs to slide very easily over PVC (machined pipe) and I am having a hard time finding something to do the job.
Is there a resource page that might indicate friction coefficients for various rubbers and polymers (I assume against a standard...
