Rotary to linear conversion. Nothing more. A motor performs a rotary motion(!) we need to sometimes drive robot arms in a 'linear' fashion.
Pretty much old hat in Robotics. ABB S2 robots used them but dropped them for far better planetary drives.

I find that its easy to over complicate stuff. Mostly the customer wants the end result and doesnt really need the painful bit in the middle. Get the solution and work backwards. Dont invent solutions for solutions...
You need to check out some 'basic' sites to give you a feel for how the industry controls stuff.
