    Digital Radiography on insulated pipes

Hi All, We are looking into using digital radiography to check wall thickness on lagged steam pipes at a power station. There is lots of literature and advertising out there but we would be interested to know what people think of the technology. What methods did you use and did you get good...

Pad welding Reheater Tubes without Argon

Thanks metengr, those are my thoughts exactly. The repair in this case is just shallow grinding marks from 'uncontrolled' grinding to remove shields on neighbouring tubes. However, i can find very little information in papers or on the net to support this position, was hoping to use it to give...

Pad welding Reheater Tubes without Argon

Hi All, I'm hoping that someone might be able to point me to some information about pad welding re-heater tubes. The standard route is to Argon flush the tubes for pad welding, but we are trying to explore the possibility of doing the pad welding without argon, as long as there is no burn...

Max FN for 316L and 304L

Great feedback, thanks everyone. It seems like most of you think looks like I don't have to worry too much about a maximum in my structural, ambient temperature application unless i'm getting higher than 15. brimstoner, where did you get your 10 max from? Is it experience or a reference? My...

Max FN for 316L and 304L

Hi All, Despite reading many references on the net and in these forums I'm still confused about what maximum Ferrite Number I should specify for welds between 316L or 304L. This is for structural welding which will be in service at the coast. The electrodes being used are as pre-qualified (by...

    EN10025 terms

I agree and there are lots of reliable websites that will give you the grade prefixes, etc, if you can't get a copy of the standards. We have noticed an increase in requests to use EN steels of late (we're in Australia and we write AS steels into our fabrication specifications). Many of these...

    Acceptance criteria for P8 PQR

Agreed, but you want to ensure that you have a ductile failure, rather than a brittle fracture mode in the weld metal.

    Back gouging after 1 run

Thanks All. It is a totall normal single vee butt weld on 8 mm 316L, using GTAW. Prequalified joint design to AS 1554.6, so no access problems. I'm not sure about their gas extraction issues. I think I might ask the fabricator why they want to do it that way and go from there. Thanks again.

    Back gouging after 1 run

Hi All, Is it normal practise to back gouge after only one run in a single vee butt weld and then finish the other runs on the first side? This is for a 316L, 8 mm butt weld. Usually I see procedures where the backgouging and run on the other side done last, so I'm not sure if this is a...

    Furnace Welding

Furnace welded tubes are allowed in ASTM A53. I have an idea of what is involved, from googlilng, but the information I found wasn't very informative. I'll have another dig around.

    Furnace Welding

Can anyone tell me what is meant by a furnace weld? It isn't a term that we come across very often in Australia. I'm asking in regards to welded steel boiler tubes, but I'd be interested to know what is involved in the process and common applications. Thanks All!

    Threading Nimonic 80A bolts

Thanks for the information TVP, I'll ask the suppliers for more information.

    Threading Nimonic 80A bolts

Hi All, We are trying to source Nimonic 80A bolts for a steam feed pump, to replace some that are approaching their end of life. One supplier is proposing to machine the threads after heat treatment, as per the material spec sheet, but the other supplier is insisting that 80A bolt threads are...

Neutra Salt Spray Test on Pulley

Sorry, make that 7 years service, not surface.

Neutra Salt Spray Test on Pulley

These are protypes, so I'm not sure. Apparently the surface of the failed pulley's still looked quite good after 7 years surface.
