I'm interested in the responses you get to this question.
In Canada, our codes and design guides don't specifically cover wind loading on this type of structure. I analyzed a similar structure recently but struggled in determining an accurate wind loading value and what should be considered for...
JStephen,
Perhaps I don't completely understand what you are trying to describe but I don't see how moving "in two directions at once" is different than just moving in one direction (in the resulting vector of the two directions at once)? i.e. What does "moving in two directions at once" look...
I am in Canada, but in a somewhat similar situation. I completed my MASc in structural directly after undergrad. At least at large consulting firms, the MASc is (or is quickly becoming) a minimum requirement for entry level positions (whether this is for better or worse is another topic all...
The structural form looks to replicate that of the CN tower.

When I reinforce beams with bars I use round bars, not reinforcing bars - they fit better without the deformations, the end product looks somewhat cleaner, and there are no questions regarding their weldability.
Also, I have found that while smaller diameter bars are easy to weld to the beam...
oldestguy,
I found some information regarding the soil type in the reports here: http://sis.agr.gc.ca/cansis/publications/surveys/on/on60/index.html
This report identified the house to be located within the Haldimand Clay Plain and classified the soil as Lacustrine Heavy Clay. The specific...
Gumpmaster,
For reference,
- where are you located?
- did you cut down the trees in proximity to the damaged foundation?

oldestguy,
Thanks for your many responses, especially in terms of how to implement a solution. Following up with my father regarding the wetting he did this summer, he added 750 gallons of water to the sump pit which then reverse fed the weeping tiles around the house. Taking the rest of your...
oldestguy,
Much thanks for your comments, they are truly respected - I have read some of your other posts on eng-tips previously in regards to these sort of issues and was aware that you recommended watering the soil. My father did apply water to the soil once observing the settlement but I am...
cvg,
Thanks for the feedback. I fully intend to recommend fixing the downspouts and improving the grade to divert water away from the house. But at this point, the first step is repairing the foundation before water starts leaking through these cracks. Any suggestions in that regard?
Great...
Hello All,
My parent’s 40 year old house in Canborough, Ontario, Canada started to shift/ sink for the first noticeable time during the driest part of the summer this year. My assessment was that the large trees adjacent the house (approximately 30-40’ away) dried out the soil (very high clay...
Brilliant - thanks for the response, that setting was exactly what I needed.

I would like to use Ram Steel Beam to analyze an existing composite beam which I wish to reinforce to reduce the deflection due to an increased loading. The plate reinforcement that I would like to add to the bottom flange causes the existing composite beam (with 45% of full composite action) to...
I have recently received my P.Eng. designation (Ontario, Canada). As part of becoming a professional, I understand my exposure to liability for my actions both inside and outside of my work has increased significantly. To this end, I am looking into liability insurance. My current thoughts are...
