I am afraid the data exist, but is not available to public (I have tried to locate them myself with no luck).
So you may need to measure the drag by yourself by performing several measurements in both directions and taking the average.
One possibility could be to tow your vehicle with a very...
feaplastic,
displacement and stress values are not realistic, but the shape of the deflection and stress locatios are. So you can estimate where to expect problems due to vibrations (max stress area), or how to make the structure better (put material/stiffness where max energy density is located).
rb1957, stress/energy density output is useful in case you want to develop the structure further; ie it tells where to put more material to increase the frequency.
Greg, I got 300-node version from NeiNastran and from UGS (Femap). At least the current 9.3x version gives installation options "stand alone" or "300-nodes demo".
As already stated, it is an illegal copy.
Some free structural softwares here:
http://www.structural-engineering.fsnet.co.uk/free.htm
Alternatively, you can download for free a 300 node demo version of Femap/Nastran to get familiar with the program
There may by too small surfaces or edges hidden in the model; try feature suppression, or select every meshable surfaces one by one, not using "pick box" or "select all" button.
I have to do a simple stress analysis for mast of a small wind turbine (3 blades, rotor diameter 4m).
For normal cases, almost anything would go, but in this case, the mast has to be longer (20m) to get the machine well above forest line.
Any recommendatios for the allowable deformation due to...
MJC,
Steam turbine is less efficient than piston engine in power level under 500-1000 kW due to poor Reynold's number. The reason why some piston engines are less effective is that they are either copied from 1890s design, or poorly constructed, whereas turbines have been intensively developed...
Thanks for your tips, they are much appreciated!
It looks like BMW have managed to make a small steam engine (10 kW) which uses waste heat from exhaust gases:

"If only one or two tires are replaced, the new tire(s) must be identical to the tires with which the car was built, and must be mounted on the front axle only"
This is a good advise only from transmission point of view. It however changes your car behaviour dangerously on snowy/icy surfaces...
Well, as petrol price is now over 8$/gallon (here in Europe), I am going to replace my stationary engine/generator by steam piston engine (3-10kW output).
I have been looking for information on the latest developments in steam engine design, but it looks like they haven't changed much since...
The lightest solution would be to make a conical thin-walled tube out of aluminum or carbon, and overpressuring the inside (like missiles or coke-tins).
I'd probably go for flat carbon panels, bolted and bonded to extruded aluminum end pieces.
Flat panels are relatively easy to manufacture even...
Here's a code for you:
For buildings lower than 15 m / 50 ft:
Add a constant pressure of 500 N/m2 to all outer surfaces of the building (walls & roof); check that bending won't break the walls or open the roof.
Then remove the pressure from one side of the building and check that the walls...
What is the best source for strength data of stainless steel in different temperatures?
I know some ss steels are listed in Military Handbook 5, matweb.com pages in in building codes (fire engineering).
On the other hand, I'm sick and tired in bying new ridiculously priced codes, which just...
