I see details for cold-form steel headers bearing on single, cold-form, stud columns. Does anyone have any input in reference to specifying a double, cold-form stud column for heavy loads? I am concerned about the load of the header crushing or crippling the leading web of the first stud. Is...
To design against overturning, I will fasten a wood stud wall to concrete foundation wall with 3/8 x 3 1/2" Rawl Spike at 32" oc.
What are your ideas for fastening steel stud walls to foundation?
Thank you!
In reference to shear walls and the orientation of gypsum board applied to cold-formed steel studs, I am instructed by the Wisconsin Enrolled Commercial Building Code to provide "strap blocking behind the horizontal joint". What is strap blocking? How is it applied or fastened? Who is a...
I have a 16.125" wide flange, bearing on a 1.5" thick, 16" wide bearing plate, bearing on a 12" deep (parallel to beam), 16" wide, reinforced concrete core, wrapped inside 8" split-faced, hollow-core, concrete masonry.
The allowable bearing stress exceeds the applied. And the beam is fastened...
Specifically, I need to know whether A307 threaded rod is weld-compatible with A992/Grade 50 wide flanges.
For future reference, how can I determine what metals, fasteners, etc, are weld-compatible with each other?
Thank you!
When determining design pressures to be used for wind loads on buildings, do I use only the "p" design pressure imposed on the exterior surface of a structure, or do I apply the "GCpi" product of internal pressure coefficient, which is also expressed in psf and results in a near double pressure...
I often see 1.33 load duration for masonry. What type of duration would this apply to?
Can a 1.6 wind load duration also apply to steel and masonry as it does to wood?
Thank you!
I have a bearing plate design example that I follow. I often come up with plate thicknesses exceeding 1", as a result of both the load and the beam shape "k1" value.
If the flange width of the beam exceeds the maximum possible plate width, I see no reason to have the plate thickness exceed...
Can vertical rebar extend into the footing to serve also as dowels, thus, eliminating one step in the fabrication process? Why or why not?
Would this force too high of a load "into" the near bottom of the footing, as opposed to being distributed more onto the top of the footing?
Thank you!
Thank you for your responses!
Yes! AISC, 9th, page 2-31 is where I started. My max end reaction is 66K. But then the web crippling formula fails my design intent. Both of the two conditions need to be considered.
I've checked my units. Have either of you run the formula?
Please give it a...
Will somebody please check my math?
AISC/ASD 9th Edition, Equation (K1-5)
I have a W8x24, Fy=50 ksi, bearing 6" on a solid grouted, concrete masonry bond beam. I have approximately 4K of solid grouted concrete masonry bearing on top of the bearing end of the beam. The allowable compressive...
