Alloy Depletion

Helicopterjunky, Thanks for the input. I do have vacuum furnaces available to me. Do you have more details you can give on how to cause alloy depletion in vacuum? I prefer to use vacuum over oxidizing atmosphere.

    Alloy Depletion

Yes I need to actually create a sample that exhibits alloy depletion using a Ni-based superalloy material (Mar-M 247 for example if you're familiar with the more common ones)

    Alloy Depletion

Yes this is for gas turbine hardware. The only details I can give is that for our lab to receive a certain approval they must have alloy depletion samples in-house (possibly for training or reference material). So as the metallurgist on staff I've been given the task of producing these...

    Alloy Depletion

I need to create some samples that exhibit alloy depletion in Ni-based superalloys. I've looked all over online and in my ASM Handbooks and can't find any general info on alloy depletion. I'm a metallurgist, so I know in general what it is. But I need more specifics if going to generate my...

Heat Treating 330 SS in vacuum

When running 330 stainless steel at 2250F in a vacuum of 5 -5 torr or better, should I be concerned about pulling out alloying elements such as chrom?

Is Aluminum more brittle than Nickel?

I'm trying to prove metallurgically which metal is more brittle during impact - Nickel or Aluminum. I've located some mechanical properties data, and it shows Al has a Elongation % of 50-70 while Ni is only 30%. It lists the Young's Mod of Al at 67 GPa and Ni at 207, which would make Ni a...

    Aluminum & Nickel Stress-Strain Curves

I'm trying to locate stress-strain curves for Aluminum and Nickel. Any help?

    Vendor for aluminum donor material

    VERY useful web page. Thanks.

    Vendor for aluminum donor material

I'm looking for a vendor to purchase aluminum source material for a coating process. I'd like the aluminum to be alloyed with another material such as cobalt or chromium, in chunklet form. Any suggestions?

    Slightly magnetic Steels

In order to get a magnetic stainless steel you'll have to get a 400 series, such as 410SS or 416SS. Their Fe contents are above 50% which allows them to be attracted to a magnet. The 300's are less than that and are not magnetic. Visit www.suppliersonline.com - you can look these metals up here.

Inward vs. Outward coatings (thermal barrier)

Pertaining to aircraft engine coatings, what are the definitions of inward coating and outward coating? What are the characteristics of each - microstructure/function? How is each formed? Any information offered on inward vs outward coatings is appreciated.

    Coatings Engineer as a career?

I'm a young materials engineer working on the development of an aluminide coating process for aircraft engine components using simple CVD. I'm trying to look 10 years ahead and I wonder is the job of a coatings engineer one that can always be employed? Is it so focused that the supply of...
