Charge air cooling- technical meaning of ambient air

The manufacturer os describing the condition of air being drawn into the cooler; i.e outside the enclosure.

high discharge pressure on first stage of air compressor

if no blockages found it could be an interstage cooling issue

    Buried PVC pipeline degradation

Thats brilliant, many thanks chaps. I am trying to get agreement from them for a wirtten instruction for actions in the event the system circulation pump fails they maintain a minimum line pressure using the static head in the storage tanks.

    Buried PVC pipeline degradation

Many thanks for this, I did talk to them about pressure testing ( and vacuum testing although prefer former for obvious reasons). The system has multiple off loading points all of which are easily accessible. I will see if i can convince them of the need for this again, many thanks Brian

Hazardous drain water on Clean Class Drillship. How to get rid of clean rain water?

Sir, I have never heard of collecting rain water before on any ship. I cannot imagine its relevance to CLean Class notation as well which is more about environmental impact. On tankers during cargo ops you may have scupper plus in which are periodically removed to drain off rain water so that...

    Buried PVC pipeline degradation

Chaps, My company is supplied with Potable water through a system which includes 6" pvc pipe line of a few 100m or so which is burried in reclaim land so the soil is quite sandy. At either ends the PVC pipe is connected to Stainless steel manifolds and branch sections. I asked about inspection...

    piston ring position

The ring rotation also evens out wear on the ring and prevents hot spots. FYI, on large slow speed engines you can have fitted ring wear measuring equipment. using this you can actually see the rings wandering around. On one medium speed engine design not only to the rings rotate but the...

    Impact of repeated overload testing

The dynamic and hydrodynamic effects are substantially greater than the overload rating. An example, for around a 15 tonne lift the various effects ( including passing the load through a moonpool and thereby having significant water column issues, can lead to a proof load testing( 5 year...

    Impact of repeated overload testing

It carries a fixed load which may be considered the SWL. The design load of the system utiilises this fixed load and incorporates a factor of safety based upon dynamic and hydrodymanic effects on the load I would assumme four deployement per day, 200 days per annum

You could look into converting to a Mechanical Seal. If you are reallystuck with packed what about graphite tape

    Impact of repeated overload testing

many thanks for responses. It is the accumulative load/fatigue issues that is of concern as some of the systems being tested are 30 Years old plus. The tests are at 1.25 every 6 months and 1.5 every 12 months SWL.

    Impact of repeated overload testing

I have been allowed to make an argument to remove frequent (6 monthly) overload testing on a class of Lifting equipment. This would have a very significant impact ( I believe positive) on a large industry sector. As a lead into this I am looking for examples where such overload testing lead to...

Loss of properties in Steel Wire Rope at 80 to 100'C

many thanks for your replies. These are in align with my own thoughts. I have contacted anouther major rope manufacturer and they are also in agreement with what you say. I have read several documents pertaining to Mine Lift Ropes which has recognised such as the importance of d/D ratios against...

Galvanized steel or CuNi pipe for sea water system on boat?

No, I am with your Superintendent. Cunifer is great for sea water systems but for a survivability ( impact for example) I would go with steel. If you want it to last you can use schedule 80 or use one of the many internal coatings that are now available and not at great cost. Done right...
