Have you checked-out Bioprinting? Not exactly the same thing, but a related topic - interesting.
Here's a few links...

Try getting your 1st source (the one that uses SW) to export the files out parasolid format. Both UG and SW use the parasolid modeling kernel and the transalation is very good. It will be much easier to work with.

Thanks Jabberwocky,
That's a good site. I did also find some DICOM image data sets on the site below. I downloaded some, but haven't had a chance to give them a try yet.

Hello,
I'm interested in converting some CT scan data into a physical model via rapid prototyping.
Is anyone aware of a good source for obtaining image data sets?? Pehaps in DICOM format.
Also, are there any good sources for obtaining 3D CAD models (already converted from dicom) of anatomical...
There's a bunch of translators on novedge.com. Maybe they have what you need. I don't think they're cheap though.

Have you considered testing in a geriatric care facility (nursing home) environment? They lift and move patents frequently. Perhaps there is a privately held facility (or chain) that would be willing to allow some testing in the hopes of increasing productivity and safety of care givers...
I do agree that the term "engineer" is applied a little too lightly these days.
I think you need to be a little careful though about referring to yourself (or engineers in general as "only those who were very very genious people".

We just upgraded to NX3.
Has anyone else attempted to apply a variable edge blend in NX3?
Is it me or did they completely destroy what was a very handy, easy to use, powerful function in NX2?
I'm attempting to apply a variable edge blend around the edges of a small medical part that's shaped...
Yes, orthosupplier.com is a good site. It is affiliated with orthoknow.com and orthocareers.com. Do you get the Bone Zone magazine? If not, you should. There's usually some pretty informative articles related to orthopedic manufacturing. I think they have back issues in pdf available on the...
Jabberwocky,
Have you checked out http://www.spineuniverse.com ?
They have good descriptions of many of the products and procedures related to spine.

These guys gave me a fairly reasonable quote for a project I was going to work on. I ended-up not doing the job, so I never had the work done. I'm not sure how their quality is, but the guy seemed very knowledgable and his price was lower than most. They can scan and give you back a SW model...
I would also create a sketch on a plane square to the axis of the cylinder and then create an extrusion, removing material to obtain the required groove width.

There's an ad in this month's edition of Manufacturing Engineering magazine for NX3 which shows what appears to be simulation for a B-Axis Mill-Turn type machine.
We run UG NX2 in house and use it to program for 5-axis milling. We haven't made the jump to NX3 yet because our custom Grip...
