What are you limitations?
By this I mean what is the size of the area where the bar code will be placed.
What amount of information do you require on the barcode.
Who will be using the information.
Will you have future requirements.
Will it be used by the end customer...

Just a quick thought but for simplicity you could use the same technology as that used in "smartcards". Each device has a magnetic strip that details the relevant information and the user passes their receiver (glove, watch) near it.
