    Water Main Break

tkall - there are only a couple of air release valves at some high points in our system, all appear to be working properly. We have four reservoirs, open to atmosphere, three with altitude valves, the fourth is fed from the filter plant and floats on the system. This main is somewhat in the...

    Water Main Break

The picture on the attached link shows a section of 12" cast iron pipe that we had a break on recently. Any ideas on the cause? Most breaks caused by settlement are circular, this one is different. It was in a paved road, relatively light traffic, five feet of cover, no work going on nearby.

    unreinforced SOG with no sawcuts

If these tubes are for hydronic heating of the floor slab, you will end up with very uneven heat distribution in the slab. Whoever designed the heat system should be able to tell you the embedment needed for the system to perform according to their calculations. The performance of the system is...

Estimate of flow in pipe given the pressure?

If it discharges to atmosphere, you can measure the area of the pipe opening, length and drop of discharge (x and y direction), and calculate the velocity. V X A = flow rate. There are a few handbooks (The Pump Handbook I believe is one) that show this. What kind of accuracy is tolerable?

    Foundations for modular homes

Check websites for HUD, there is a manual for foundation design for modular homes, single and double wide. It's pretty straightforward. I was asked by a lending institution to check a couple of foundations; I haven't found one yet even close to adequate.

    Min reinf in equipment foundation

What kind of equipment is this? There may be significant dynamic loads involved.

    Having problems in finding leaks

There are some inexpensive listening devices sold by companies such as Pollard Water that can be used quite effectively. You can also use listening devices that are used for listening to steam traps and bearing housings on rotating equipment. A local industrial plant may have one you could beg...

    Manganese Removal- Water Treatment

The addition of an oxidant such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide, or sodium permanganate can cause manganese to precipitate out. A usefull source for information is "Chemistry of Water Treatment" by Faust and Aly, available at the AWWA bookstore. There are some case studies in the manual aslo.

School of Professional Eng Question of the Week June 26

A couple of references, besides the PE reference manual, go over this in a lot of detail. "The Pump Handbook", by Karassik, and "Groundwater and Wells", by Johnson Screen. (GPM X Head in Feet)/(3960 x pump eff. x motor eff.)= motor horsepower. .746 kW=1 HP. Leave out motor and pump efficiency...

    Water and Sewer Inventory

Some of the locating equipment available will also give fairly accurate depths of water mains. You can also measure down to the tops of the gate valves where they are accessible. How many miles of pipe are involved?

    Crane support

I have seen this in many plants, both old and newer installations. The ones I have seen have all been lighter applications - 10,000# or less. As long as it is designed properly, it should be okay, even with heavier design loads.

    Brick streets

I had a brick driveway installed at my house about 8 years ago. The bricks were from a Canadian manufacturer, and I was told at the time that they are still used in some parts of Canada as they move better with the frost and traffic without surface cracks developing as in blacktop. I was also...

Hydraulics - side weirs as flow distribution in a channel

What flow rate are you designing for? A fairly simple distribution box, like those used in filtration plants, will probably work. They are often set up with flow going under one set of weirs and over another. This stabilizes the distribution and eliminates the effects from wave action. If the...

How to charge tenants for water bill

Check with your water supplier - they may have a standard detail for a meter manifold, and they may let you install separate meters and set up an account in each tenant's name so they will be billed directly.

    Mixing distance in a pipe

There are no baffles or bends. Just straight pipe in an existing concrete vault.
