    2.25*Module -v- 2.35*Module whole depth interchangeability

We normally specify spur and helical gears with 2.35M whole depth and 2.0M working depth to allow for grinding and shaving if necessary. We have a supplier who is proposing to change whole depth to 2.25M to suit their standard hobs. Everything else: working depth, centre distance, rack shift...

    "keystone" taper on clutch spline

Thanks Gearcutter, that's very good info.

    "keystone" taper on clutch spline

PJM - that looks exactly like what we are looking for! Do you have a source for the photo? And possibly even a reference for the standard (if any) to which they were manufactured or alternatively a reference to the manufacturer of the gears? tbuelna - unfortunately a helical arrangement is...

    "keystone" taper on clutch spline

No, this isn't a dog clutch, but a normal spline with tapered-out ends. See attached below for a schematic (which exaggerates the taper).http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=fd8fc389-4e53-461d-91a0-f72126095ccc&file=Keystone_spline_exaggerated_detail.pdf

    "keystone" taper on clutch spline

I am trying to specify a "keystone" taper on a cylindrical spline, i.e. to have the male and female splines be cylindrical in cross-section, but to have the tooth thickness on the male, and space width on the female, increase linearly along the axis. The application is a female selector which...

    ZGN 715

Thanks a lot, I was having great difficulty tracking this down.

    ZGN 715

We have a steering box with the input spline specified as 1" x 79 serrations per ZGN 715. I have found the dimensions of this on a Nadella shaft catalogue, but I am looking for a mating female part. Can anyone advise: Dimension of a female 1"x79 ZGN 715 spline? Who issues ZGN 715? I can't...

    Bronze Bushing Max Pressure

Thanks TVP; that was exactly what I was looking for.

    Bronze Bushing Max Pressure

We are looking to use a bronze bushing in a vehicle differential planet gear (i.e. high-load, low speed, oil lubrication). We are looking at either Al Bronze CC333G = C955000 or a phosphor bronze. We are getting different values for a recommended max bearing pressure depending on where we look...

Pros and cons of 8*8 against 6*6 wheeled vehicles

One issue with 6x6 -v- 8x8 is that, in order to evenly distribute the axle loads, CG has to be towards the rear, i.e closer to the rear bogie. This forces the CG height up relative to an 8x8 where the CG is pretty much in the middle and can be lower down because payload can fit in the gap...

Low Temperature operation of Carburized Gears

Hi geesamand. Yes we did have to change the oil spec because of pour point and I never posted to this thread. Shell recommended Donax TD Low Vis which is a tractor oil with a pour point of -51C

Low Temperature operation of Carburized Gears

Thanks everyone. No, we didn't specify ATF - we told them to use a low-temp gear oil e.g. 75W-90 rather than our usual 80W-90. FWIW, the general advice I've got elsewhere is also that it shouldn't be a problem for the gears, but we'll see...

Low Temperature operation of Carburized Gears

A customer intends testing a vehicle of ours after conditioning it to -46 C (-50F). The vehicle has an axle and hub reduction which use case-carburized 8620 and 4820 gears. Does anyone have any experience of operation of such gears at these kind of temperatures? Obviously after a few minutes...

ASTM A572 Grade 50 Fatigue Coefficients

Hi, I am looking for Strain-Life or failing that Stress-Life fatigue coefficients for the above steel plate. My usual sources (ASM Handbook Vol 19 and the ASM "Atlas of Fatigue Curves") don't seem to have it. Can anyone help?

    DIN 1.6759 (G18NiMoCr 3-6) Cast Steel

Thanks. Of course it's the usual problem of how close it has to be to be "equivalent" without giving the supplier too much latitude. I was actually looking at ASTM A958 SC8620 and up before I read your post, which is probably the closest in chemical comp, but 8620 wouldn't have the strength...
